Peter M. Leibold is the Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer at Ascension, a role he took on in 2014. In this position, he is responsible for leading Ascension's advocacy and government affairs strategy with a focus on transforming healthcare and ensuring access for vulnerable populations. Prior to joining Ascension, Leibold was the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) for fifteen years. His background also includes serving as General Counsel to the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) from 1996 to 1999 and working at the law firm of Bryan Cave. Earlier in his career, he held multiple roles, including chief of staff, for U.S. Senator John C. Danforth and clerked for a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Leibold is a graduate of Haverford College and Yale Law School.
Christine Kocot McCoy is the Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Ascension. In this role, she is responsible for providing legal counsel to the organization, its Board of Directors, and executive management, as well as leading legal services for Ascension and its subsidiary organizations. Her responsibilities include managing affiliation initiatives, supporting business development, and handling outside legal relationships. Before becoming Executive Vice President and General Counsel, she served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and earlier as Deputy General Counsel at Ascension. She joined Ascension in 2004. Prior to joining Ascension, McCoy was a partner at the law firm Armstrong Teasdale, LLP, where she focused on medical malpractice and employment litigation. She represented hospitals and physicians in malpractice cases in Missouri and Illinois state and federal courts, and also handled employment and labor matters. Before her time at Armstrong Teasdale, she served as an Assistant Attorney General acting as Associate General Counsel for the Missouri Department of Labor, Division of Labor Standards. McCoy holds a bachelor's degree in business from Eastern Illinois University and a Juris Doctorate from Saint Louis University School of Law. She is a licensed member of the Missouri and Illinois bar associations. She has been recognized for her legal work, including being named St. Louis Business Journal's 2021 General Counsel of the Year and one of the area's "Most Influential Business Women" in 2007. She has also been elected to the board of directors of FM Global.
Eric S. Engler is the Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff at Ascension. In this role, he works with the President and CEO to align the activities of various Ascension leadership teams and the Board of Directors. He also oversees the day-to-day operations and strategic evolution of Ascension's Mission-inspired Transformation program and leads the Ascension Transformation Office. Prior to his current position, Engler served as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for Ascension, where he was responsible for developing the organization's strategy. He joined Ascension in 2001. Before joining Ascension, Engler held financial planning roles at Reuters, plc, and Bridge Information Systems, Inc. He also served as a Transaction Services Director for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, leading merger and acquisition transactions, and was an Equity Research Associate with Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc. He began his career in the Assurance and Business Advisory Services practice of Price Waterhouse. Engler holds a bachelor's degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business. He is also a graduate of the Ascension Leadership Academy and serves on the Board of Trustees for Saint Louis University.
Took on the role of President, Ascension, effective February 1, 2023. Served as Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer for Ascension since July 2019 and led the development and implementation of Ascension's strategic plan. Recognized by Modern Healthcare as a Top 20 Innovator in Healthcare in 2021. Led Ascension's digital and data strategy. Served on the Ascension Board of Directors from 2014 to 2018 before becoming Ascension Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer in September 2018. Prior to that, was Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer for Motorola Solutions, Inc.
Dr. Richard Fogel is the Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Ascension. He assumed this role in August 2022, joining the Ascension Leadership Team. Prior to this appointment, he was the Chief Clinical Officer for Clinical & Network Services at Ascension since 2019, responsible for clinical performance across the national health ministry. His work has included leading quality and safety initiatives, developing physician alignment strategies and service lines, and building a system-wide clinical research infrastructure. Dr. Fogel also headed Ascension's clinical response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A practicing cardiologist and electrophysiologist, he previously served as Chief Clinical Officer for Ascension Indiana. His past leadership roles in Indiana include Chief Executive Officer of St. Vincent Medical Group and Chair of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer at St. Vincent. He earned his bachelor's and medical degrees from Brown University and completed his postgraduate medical training, including an electrophysiology fellowship, at Boston University Medical Center and Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. Dr. Fogel is scheduled to transition to the role of Chief Health Outcomes Officer on January 1, 2025, before retiring on June 30, 2025.
MBA. Named Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, effective March 1 (as of March 8, 2024). Leads development and advancement of Ascension's strategy and positioning for growth. Joined Ascension in 2000. Since September 2020, served as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. Previously, was Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for the Ascension Saint Thomas market in Tennessee. Served as Vice President for Saint Thomas Health Alliance from 2013 to 2015. Prior to 2015, led the Tennessee market's physician enterprise and held numerous leadership positions.
Promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, effective June 1 (as of March 8, 2024), following the retirement of Herb Vallier. Joined Ascension in 2018. Since October 2021, served as Senior Vice President, HR, leading the Organizational Capability Solutions team.
