Clay Ashdown is the Chief Financial Officer at Intermountain Health, a position he has held since October 2023. He began his career at Intermountain Health in 2000 as an advanced financial analyst after working at the accounting firm KPMG. Over his tenure of nearly 25 years with the organization, he has advanced through various finance leadership roles. Prior to his current role as CFO, Ashdown was the Senior Vice President of Finance Operations. His extensive experience at Intermountain Health includes leadership accountability in areas such as finance operations, financial planning, debt and capital markets, payer contracting, revenue cycle, construction, and real estate. Academically, Ashdown holds a degree in Accounting with a minor in Russian and an MBA, both from the University of Utah.
Nannette Berensen is the Chief Operating Officer at Intermountain Health. She has a long history with the organization, having first worked there as a phlebotomist during college. She returned to Intermountain in 2006 as the director of pharmacy services for Intermountain Medical Center and has since held numerous leadership roles. Prior to becoming COO, she served as the vice president and chief operating officer of Clinical Shared Services, where she developed and implemented the Clinical Shared Services model across 13 clinical service lines and modernized the Biorepository. She also supported the launch of Tellica Imaging and served as its interim CEO and board chair. Before rejoining Intermountain, she was an associate professor at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the director of the MUSC Drug Information Center. Berensen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mass communications, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Utah, as well as a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from the University of Providence. She also completed a specialized residency in drug information practice and pharmacotherapy at the National Institutes of Health.
Heather Brace is the Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer at Intermountain Health, an integrated, not-for-profit health system with over 65,000 employees across seven states. She joined Intermountain in 2000 and assumed her current role in 2018. In this position, she is responsible for the organization's engagement culture and has strategic oversight for areas such as talent management and development, recruitment, human resources service delivery, total rewards, culture enhancement, learning and development, and diversity and inclusion. Brace has over 20 years of leadership and human resources experience in healthcare. Her previous roles at Intermountain include HR Executive Partner, HR Regional Director, HR Director for Homecare & Hospice, HR Manager for Intermountain Medical Center, Sr. Consultant, and Senior Recruiter. As an HR Executive Partner, she played a key role in reorganizing 43 Intermountain functions to create a more aligned approach to patient and caregiver service. She is passionate about empowering leaders and employees and emphasizes the employee experience. Under her leadership, Intermountain has implemented various initiatives, including expanding employee education, developing a remote work strategy, enhancing benefits such as parental leave and infertility coverage, and increasing the minimum wage. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she created benefits like Covid Pay for impacted caregivers and facilitated partnerships with healthcare systems in New York. Heather Brace earned both her Master's degree in Health Services Administration and Health Promotion and Education and her Bachelor's degree in Mass Communications from the University of Utah. She also holds a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification from the HR Certification Institute. In 2002, she led the medical volunteer program for the Salt Lake City Olympic and Paralympic Games. She is a first-generation graduate and a working mother of two teenage boys.
Mitch Cloward is the Desert Region President at Intermountain Health, overseeing operations in Southern Nevada and Southwest Utah. He has over 20 years of leadership experience with Intermountain Health, which he joined in October 2002 as an operations director for Intermountain's Medical Group. His healthcare career began as a housekeeper in the intensive care unit of a large hospital. Cloward's diverse background includes experience in insurance, physician practice management, and hospital operations. He previously served as Intermountain Health's Market President – Desert South Utah and President of St. George Regional Hospital. He advanced to hospital operations officer in 2006 and became administrator for both campuses of Dixie Regional Medical Center (now St. George Regional Hospital) in 2017. Before joining Intermountain Health, Cloward's career started as a financial analyst at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, where he became an administrator over physician practices. He also directed finance and became vice president of network development for Great West Life and Annuity/One Health Plan. He holds a Master's in Healthcare Administration from Texas Woman's University. Cloward has also been involved in community roles, including trustee for Utah Tech University and board chair for the Dixie Applied Technology College. In 2015, he was recognized with the "Innovator of the Year" award by the St. George Chamber of Commerce.
David Flood serves as the Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Intermountain Health, where he also holds the position of President of the Intermountain Foundation. He has been with Intermountain Healthcare since 2013. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive healthcare fundraising network that supports Intermountain's hospitals and services. Prior to joining Intermountain, Flood held leadership positions in both healthcare and education. Most recently, he was the president of the Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations in New Jersey. He also served as the president of the Somerset Medical Center Foundation and held leadership roles at Seton Hall University, Seton Hall Preparatory School, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Flood is recognized as a leader in healthcare philanthropy. He is a past Board Chair and current member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP). The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) named him New Jersey's Outstanding Professional Fundraiser. In 2019, he received the Harold J. (Si) Seymour Award from the AHP, which is the highest honor in healthcare philanthropy. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Seton Hall University, where he is currently a member of the Board of Regents.
Rob Hitchcock is the President and CEO for Select Health at Intermountain Health. He assumed this role after serving as interim president and CEO since November 2022, and initially joined Select Health in August 2022 as the president of government programs and chief value-based officer. Hitchcock has a distinguished career in the healthcare industry spanning over 25 years, with extensive executive leadership experience at national insurance provider organizations. Prior to his time at Select Health, he was most recently the chief operating officer for Carelon, a division of Anthem, and has also held executive roles at Centene, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Humana. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from the University of Utah, as well as a Master of Health Administration degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dan Liljenquist is the Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Intermountain Health. He joined Intermountain in 2012, initially as Director of Special Projects in the Shared Accountability Organization. In his current role, he is responsible for helping the Executive Leadership Team set and achieve strategic priorities, and oversees Intermountain's Enterprise Initiative and Market Intelligence & Planning Offices. Before joining Intermountain, Liljenquist had a career in both business and politics. He served one term in the Utah State Senate from 2009 to 2011, where he was recognized for his work on Medicaid and public-sector pension reforms. Prior to his political career, he worked as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company from 2001 to 2003. He then joined Affiliated Computer Services, a Fortune 500 company, as Director of Operational Strategy for their Commercial Solutions Group. From 2005 to 2011, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of FOCUS Services, LLC. In 2012, he founded Liljenquist Strategies, a consulting company focused on public sector reforms. Liljenquist is also known as the lead architect and Board Chair of Civica Rx, a non-profit generic drug company aimed at addressing drug shortages and high prices. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Brigham Young University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School.
Megan Mahncke is the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Intermountain Health. In this role, she is responsible for brand development, marketing and public relations campaigns, and internal strategic messaging. She also serves as president of the Intermountain Community Care Foundation. Before the merger with Intermountain Health, Mahncke was the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at SCL Health and President of the SCL Health Foundations. During her eight years at SCL Health, she held various leadership positions, starting as the Vice President and Chief Development Officer for Saint Joseph Hospital in 2013. She was promoted to Vice President and Regional Director of Marketing & Communications in 2015, became President of the SCL Health Foundations in 2018, and took on the role of Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications in 2019. Mahncke's professional background includes over 15 years of experience in marketing and communications, fundraising, and volunteer management for non-profit organizations. Her previous roles include leadership positions in major gifts and campaigns at the University of Denver and History Colorado. She successfully led a $30 million campaign for History Colorado and was instrumental in securing a $42 million gift for the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation. She holds a master's degree in Conflict Resolution from the University of Denver and a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication from Colorado State University. Mahncke is actively involved in the non-profit community and serves on multiple boards, including the Board of Directors of Colorado Succeeds.
Greg Matis is the Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer at Intermountain Health, with over 30 years of experience as a healthcare lawyer. He joined Intermountain after serving as outside counsel and later as senior counsel, deputy general counsel, and vice president. His background also includes roles as in-house counsel for other organizations and experience with the law firm of Kimball, Parr, Waddoups, Brown & Gee, as well as clerking for a U.S. Court of Appeals judge. Matis holds degrees from Brigham Young University and the University of Chicago Law School. He is also an adjunct professor at BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School and part of the faculty at the Intermountain Health Leadership Institute.
Mandy Richards, MSN, RN, APRN, ACNS-BC, NEA-BC, is the chief nursing executive (CNE) for Intermountain Health, joining in January 2023. She is responsible for advancing patient care services and clinical technology innovation, focusing on strategy and operations. Richards previously served as the executive vice president and chief nursing officer (CNO) at Hartford HealthCare in Hartford, Connecticut, for two years. Before that, she spent 15 years at Allina Health in Minneapolis, Minnesota, holding expanding leadership roles and ultimately becoming CNO for the health system, overseeing over 8,000 registered nurses and health professionals. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, and a mini-MBA from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is also pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Yale University. Richards holds a Nurse Executive-Advanced Board Certification and an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. In 2022, she was recognized among Becker's Healthcare's 66 CNOs to know for her work in improving quality, patient experience, staff engagement, and labor optimization.
Susan Robel, RN, is the Canyons Region President at Intermountain Health. In this role, which she assumed in January 2022, she is responsible for driving vision, growth, business development, clinical operations, caregiver engagement, and culture across 21 hospitals, 130 clinics, and other operations in Idaho and Utah. Prior to becoming Canyons Region President, Robel served as the chief nurse executive for Intermountain Health, overseeing nursing and clinical services across the system starting in March 2019. Before joining Intermountain Health, she had a distinguished 34-year career at Geisinger Health, where she held the position of executive vice president, chief nursing and patient experience officer. At Geisinger, she was instrumental in standardizing nursing practices and establishing the Geisinger Nursing Institute. Her career at Geisinger began in 1983 as a staff nurse. Robel holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from Penn State University and a Master of Healthcare Administration from Wilkes University. She has also completed doctoral studies in business administration at Walden University. She is recognized as a clinical executive and an advocate for clinicians, patients, and the community.
Jim Sheets, MBA, MHA, is the Peaks Region President at Intermountain Health, overseeing healthcare operations in Colorado, Montana, Kansas, Wyoming, and New Mexico. He joined Intermountain Health in 2007 and has over 16 years of leadership experience with the organization. Before returning to Intermountain Health, he served as group president for 10 CommonSpirit Health hospitals in Colorado and Utah for nine months. Sheets' previous roles at Intermountain Health include CEO and Administrator at LDS Hospital and Operations Officer. Prior to his time at Intermountain, he held leadership positions at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix and Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California. He also completed an administrative fellowship at Catholic Healthcare West and Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital in California. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the University of Utah and earned both a Master of Healthcare Administration and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Minnesota. Sheets is also an adjunct professor in the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah and a past Chair of the Advisory Board for the Master in Healthcare Administration program there. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Utah Hospital Association.
JP Valin, MD, MHA, FACP, is the Chief Clinical Officer at Intermountain Health, a position he has held since 2022 following the merger of Intermountain Healthcare and SCL Health. In this role, he oversees clinical operations for 33 hospitals and 385 clinics across an eight-state region, focusing on improving equitable access to high-quality care. Dr. Valin is recognized for his work in advancing the value-based care model. Before joining Intermountain Health, Dr. Valin was the Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at SCL Health, having previously served as President of Medical Group and Provider Services there. He also spent 10 years in various leadership roles at Banner Health. With 15 years of clinical practice, Dr. Valin is an experienced full-scope general internist and hospitalist. His education includes degrees from Georgetown University and New York Medical College, and he completed his Internal Medicine Residency at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. He also holds a Master's in Healthcare Administration from the Health Management Academy/University of Providence. Dr. Valin is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has been recognized with awards such as the Clinician Experience Project's CEO Award of Excellence, the Leapfrog Group's recognition for Pandemic Heroism, and Huron's What's Right in Health Care® Hero Award. Becker's Healthcare also named him among their 2023 Chief Medical Officers to Know.
