Carl S. Armato

President and Chief Executive Officer

As president and CEO of Novant Health, Carl Armato leads the integrated healthcare system. He has been CEO since 2012 after joining the system in 1998. [2, 3, 10] Under his leadership, Novant Health has been recognized as one of the safest healthcare systems in the U.S. by The Leapfrog Group and has transformed into a top integrated healthcare delivery network. [10] He has overseen significant growth and leadership changes. [2, 3]

Frank E. Emory, Jr.

Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer

Frank E. Emory, Jr. is the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer at Novant Health, a position he has held since 2019. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing Novant Health's legal, government relations, risk management, corporate audit, and compliance functions. Before joining Novant Health, Emory was a partner at the international law firm Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP for 17 years, where he was co-head of the Litigation and Labor Group and managing partner of the Charlotte office. His earlier legal career included partnerships at Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A. and Ferguson, Stein, Watt, Wallas & Adkins, P.A. Emory is an Angier B. Duke Scholar graduate of Duke University and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law on a Morehead Law Fellowship. He has also held significant leadership roles outside of his direct legal practice, including chairman of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, chairman of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Mecklenburg County Bar. He was notably the first African American and youngest chairman of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission.

John Gizdic

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Responsible for acute care, integrated care solutions, nursing and clinical services, and, in North Carolina, the Triad and Coastal Regions. [1, 3, 4, 5] He previously had oversight for all Novant Health hospitals. [3] He was the CEO of New Hanover Regional Medical Center when Novant Health acquired the system in 2021. [3]

Sanjay Gupta

Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer

Sanjay Gupta is the Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer at Novant Health, where he is responsible for driving the health system's value proposition and overseeing marketing, communications, digital transformation, internal consulting, and integration efforts. Before joining Novant Health, he served as Chief Marketing Officer & Chief Digital Officer at Guaranteed Rate, Inc. Prior to that, he held various executive leadership positions at TIAA, including EVP, Head of Client Solutions & Outcomes. His background also includes executive roles at Allstate Insurance Company, Ally Financial, Bank of America, SciQuest, and FedEx. Gupta is also a member of the board of directors for Steelcase Inc. He holds an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering from the University of Mumbai.

Kim Henderson

Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer

Oversees Novant Health's people and culture team as well as team member well-being. [11] She also has responsibility for board governance, patient experience, employer solutions, protective services, community engagement, sports partnerships and Novant Health's foundations. [11] Henderson previously served as chief patient experience officer and system chief of staff. [2, 11]

Denise Mihal

Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing and Clinical Operations Officer

Denise Mihal is the Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing and Clinical Operations Officer at Novant Health. She began her healthcare career over 38 years ago as a registered nurse in intensive care. Mihal joined Novant Health in 2000 as the administrator of Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. She has held several leadership roles within Novant Health, including chief operating officer for the greater Winston-Salem and eastern markets, and president of Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. Her early career experience also includes serving as Administrative Director of Nursing at Homestead Hospital and as a registered nurse in the ICU at Saint Barnabas Hospital. Mihal is responsible for systemwide leadership of professional nurse practice, clinical operations, care management, quality and safety, team member and patient experience, performance improvement, and workforce planning. She oversees clinical operations for the organization's professional nurse resource team and case management team, and collaborates with leaders in surgical services, behavioral health services, trauma and emergency services, and clinical and patient education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from William Paterson University and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University. In 2021, she was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to serve on the State Health Coordinating Council. Mihal was also recognized in Becker's Hospital Review's 2020 list of Chief Nursing Officers to Know.

Onyeka N. Nchege

Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Information Officer

Named executive vice president and chief digital and information officer. [2] He is a veteran tech executive and joined Novant Health in 2020. [2]

Pamela Alston Oliver, MD

Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer

Provides strategic, clinical, and cultural leadership to ensure high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-centered care. [9] She also leads health equity initiatives and guides Novant Health institutes. [9] Dr. Oliver is a board-certified ob-gyn and has practiced at Novant Health WomanCare since 2005. [9]

Alice Pope

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Joined Novant Health as CFO in May (of 2024, based on publication date). [2] Previously served as CFO at Inova Health System in Virginia. [2]

Dean Swindle

Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, and President, Novant Health Enterprises

Responsible for ambulatory care, physician enterprise, integrated value-based care model, strategy, Novant Health Enterprises, and the Charlotte and South Carolina Regions, as well as growth regions.
