OhioHealth vascular neurologist Dr. BJ Hicks has been recognized as the American Heart Association (AHA) Physician of the Year [5]. Dr. Hicks is being honored for his work in elevating stroke care at OhioHealth and beyond, with a focus on ensuring rescue therapy and treatment are accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live [5]. He was nominated for helping OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital improve their stroke care and treat patients according to AHA guidelines [5]. His work includes acute stroke treatment and care, central nervous system vasculitis, and stroke [5]. Dr. Hicks is also recognized as an advocate for health-improving policies at the local and state government levels, and he created and led the American Heart Association Franklin County Hypertension Network [5]. He previously served as the American Heart Association Midwest Region Board President [5]. A special ceremony will be held in June to honor Dr. Hicks [5].

OhioHealth is undertaking expansion projects across Ohio with over $1.5 billion in facility investments [3]. These investments are aimed at meeting the growing needs of the communities OhioHealth serves [3]. On March 3, OhioHealth opened the first phase of its $400 million construction project at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. This includes the new 33,000-square-foot Grant Family Medicine building with 50 patient rooms, a “transition of care” clinic, and clinical learning opportunities for 36 family medicine resident physicians [3]. The full Grant Medical Center renovation, covering 310,000 square feet, is expected to be completed by 2028 and will include a new medical office building, a five-story parking garage, and a seven-story trauma center [3]. OhioHealth's $250-million expansion of OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital is now set to open in 2028, two years earlier than originally planned [3]. The 200,000-square-foot project includes the construction of a new six-floor building [3]. Also, the new OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital Women's Center, a $600-million, 555,000-square-foot facility, is scheduled to open in 2027 and will offer comprehensive women's healthcare services [3]. Additionally, OhioHealth is planning a new $226-million Comprehensive Cancer Center, with construction expected to begin in 2026. A $31-million health center in Canal Winchester is also being built and is set to open in the summer of 2025 [3].

The City of Columbus has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in federal court over $11.4 billion in funding cuts to infectious disease programs [9, 10]. Columbus Public Health (CPH) was set to receive $3.1 million in federal funding [9, 10]. Due to not receiving this funding, CPH had to fire workers and take away from other programs and had to eliminate 11 positions, leaving only 11 employees to handle infectious disease investigations [9, 10]. The city said it directly affects infectious disease investigations, which comes at a time of measles outbreaks [9, 10]. The lawsuit alleges the move violates the U.S Constitution by terminating funds appropriated by Congress and violates the Department of Health and Human Services' own regulations in terms of canceling grants [9, 10]. The cuts also eliminate $100,000 for the CelebrateOne initiative, which works to decrease infant mortality and improve mental health [9]. City leaders say Columbus Public Health had to eliminate 11 positions because of funding cuts [10].

OhioHealth has been named the 2025 Innovation Award winner by the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC) [4]. The AIAMC presents the award annually to its institutional member that best exemplifies creative and innovative approaches to medical education and research, resulting in better patient outcomes [4]. Dr. Joy Walton, medical director, community care and associate program director, Internal Medicine Residency Program, OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, and Dr. Alexandra McKenna, OhioHealth associate program director, accepted the award in New Orleans at the annual awards dinner sponsored by the AIAMC [4]. The award recognizes the development and/or implementation of innovative medical education programs for residents, physicians, and other staff; innovation in significant themes such as provider well-being, quality improvement, population health, health disparities, and/or cultural competency initiatives; and the development and/or application of scientific discoveries [4].
