UNC Health is responding to a social media post by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein that suggested UNC Health Rockingham, an Eden-based hospital, was among five rural hospitals at risk of closure under a proposed congressional budget. UNC Health issued a statement to WFMY News 2 asserting that UNC Health Rockingham is not in danger of closing and that UNC Health remains committed to keeping its hospitals across the state open to provide patient care. The health system also noted that the report referenced by Governor Stein was created without consultation from UNC Health leadership, and they were not given an opportunity to review and comment on the status of the UNC Health hospitals mentioned. While acknowledging that federal budget cuts, particularly to Medicaid, could negatively impact rural hospitals nationwide, UNC Health stated that hospitals owned by large health systems like itself are better protected against the risk of closure.
