Over the past week, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and UnityPoint Health – Des Moines have experienced a significant increase in patient volumes, leading to very long wait times in their emergency departments. [6] The Polk County Medical Coordination Center issued a media release urging the community to utilize primary care providers or urgent care locations instead of going directly to the emergency department unless facing a true emergency. [6] Hospitals are reportedly seeing a high volume of patients with various illnesses, including those typically seen in winter, in addition to traumas, contributing to the strain on healthcare systems. [6] The public is advised that patients in the emergency department are seen based on the severity of their condition, not their arrival time, and calling a primary care provider first can help assess the situation and direct patients to the most appropriate care setting. [6]

Medical providers are working to care for patients, who are being prioritized based on the severity of their condition. The community is encouraged to contact their primary care provider or use telehealth for less severe issues and to continue practicing prevention methods.

UnityPoint Health has reached a letter of intent to acquire MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. This tentative deal was announced in late May/early June, with the expectation that it will be finalized this summer. MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, part of Trinity Health, is a significant facility with 464 licensed beds and is the only Level II trauma center in western Iowa. The acquisition would also include the medical center's physician practices, specialty care clinics, and home care services, adding a sizable hospital to UnityPoint Health's portfolio which already has a substantial presence in Iowa. [2, 5] The health system, headquartered in West Des Moines, is looking to expand its footprint, and this acquisition represents a notable move following past strategic decisions, including the sale of hospitals in Illinois in 2023 and exploring a large merger in the same year that was ultimately dropped. Nurses at UnityPoint Health-Meriter have ratified a tentative agreement, ending a nearly week-long strike. The agreement was reached between UnityPoint Health-Meriter and the Service Employees International Union of Wisconsin (SEIU) on Saturday, June 1st, and was ratified by nurses on Sunday, June 2nd. The nurses had been striking for better pay, safer staffing levels, and improved workplace security. The new two-year contract includes safety protections for some staff, an 8% wage increase over the next two years, and establishes a new framework for staff to voice their concerns. [4] UnityPoint Health-Meriter expressed pleasure in reaching a contract that recognizes the skill, commitment, and passion of their nurses. [4] This marked the first time in history that Meriter nurses had gone on strike, and they returned to work following the ratification of the agreement. [4]

UnityPoint Health-Des Moines announced the consolidation of its maternity services. The services currently offered at Iowa Lutheran Hospital will be moved and consolidated with those at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Methodist West Hospital. This change is driven by a steady decline in deliveries at Iowa Lutheran over the past several years and an increased demand for general medical and surgical beds in the Des Moines area. The maternity department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital is scheduled to close on July 31, 2025. All staff working in the affected maternity department will be relocated to the maternity departments at Iowa Methodist and Methodist West. UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine-East Des Moines and Midwife Services of UnityPoint Health-Des Moines will continue to provide prenatal care but will transition deliveries to Iowa Methodist and Methodist West Hospitals.
