A father of four from Orlando, Florida, recently traveled to Chicago to undergo a rare second liver transplant at Northwestern Medicine. The patient had previously fought lung cancer. Northwestern University, not Northwestern Medicine hospitals directly, announced changes to its employee benefits, transitioning to new medical, dental, and prescription insurance providers effective January 1, 2026. The medical plans will be administered by United Healthcare (UHC), the PPO dental plan by Delta Dental of Illinois, and the prescription drug plan by CVS Caremark. These changes are being made to better contain costs for the University and its employees. This impacts benefits-eligible employees and retirees under age 65 currently covered under the Legacy Plans. The next Open Enrollment period for these 2026 plans will be from October 27, 2025, to November 14, 2025.

A team of radiologists and engineers at Northwestern Medicine has developed a first-of-its-kind generative AI system designed to revolutionize radiology by increasing speed and accuracy. This AI tool was deployed across the 11-hospital Northwestern Medicine network and analyzed nearly 24,000 radiology reports over a five-month period in 2024. The study comparing report creation times with and without the AI tool showed an average 15.5% boost in efficiency, with some radiologists seeing gains as high as 40%, all without compromising accuracy. The time saved allows for faster diagnoses, particularly crucial in urgent cases. This AI system was built from scratch using clinical data from within the Northwestern Medicine network, rather than adapting large, internet-trained models, allowing for a lightweight and nimble tool specifically tailored for radiology at Northwestern. It analyzes entire scans and generates a report that is 95% complete and personalized to each patient's reporting style, which the radiologist can then review and finalize. [11, 13]

Northwestern Medicine's previously approved plans for a more than $100 million expansion were noted in DataBid's list of Illinois Top Projects of the Week for June 1-7, 2025. The expansion includes adding 24 intensive care unit beds and 25 medical and surgical beds to its flagship hospital in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood, aimed at alleviating overcrowding in the emergency department.
