ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital has introduced a new, specialized ambulance dedicated to transporting newborns and infants requiring neonatal intensive care. Unveiled on June 4, 2025, this state-of-the-art NICU transport ambulance is expected to significantly improve emergency response times and enhance the care for the region's most vulnerable patients. The custom-designed ambulance is stationed at ProMedica Toledo Hospital and will be used for newborns weighing up to 10 pounds who need specialized medical attention. ProMedica anticipates that the faster deployment capabilities of this dedicated ambulance will help close critical time gaps and lead to better outcomes for newborns in distress. The NICU at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital is already recognized nationally for its high level of care for premature infants and those with complex health needs, and this new ambulance further solidifies its role as a key center for neonatal excellence in the area. The ambulance is equipped with an onboard incubator offering temperature regulation and safety restraints, as well as easy access for clinical staff. It also carries emergency medications, real-time monitoring systems, and neonatal ventilators designed for premature and low-birthweight infants. According to a ProMedica official, having a dedicated NICU transport unit is not common among hospital systems, and this addition allows ProMedica to provide this level of care not only within the hospital but also during transport.
