Meridith Balas, a patient who suffered from debilitating migraine attacks for years with little relief, has found significant improvement in her quality of life through comprehensive care received at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute Headache Center. Under the care of Umer Najib, M.D., director of the RNI Headache Center, a personalized combination of medications was developed that effectively managed her chronic migraines. Balas's successful treatment has allowed her to achieve personal goals, such as visiting all 50 U.S. states. Dr. Najib noted that migraine is a complex disease with symptoms that can sometimes be more severe than the headache itself, and the lingering effects can last for an extended period in patients with frequent attacks. Balas's case highlights the center's approach to complex migraine patients who may not respond to individual therapies but benefit greatly from a tailored combination approach. Balas, who injured her neck at age 16, realized the extent of the damage years later when her migraines worsened, leading to frequent hospital stays due to severe nausea and dehydration. [31]

The WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) has launched a groundbreaking athlete player safety initiative in Marion County, partnering with football helmet manufacturer Riddell. This initiative aims to enhance student-athlete protection in middle and high school tackle football programs across the county. As part of the program, the RNI and Riddell will distribute 100 Riddell Axiom helmets with InSite Analytics access free of charge to schools including Fairmont Senior High, East Fairmont Middle and High, North Marion High, West Fairmont Middle, and North Marion Husky Pups. The InSite Analytics platform will enable coaches to analyze head impact data to develop strategies for improved performance and reduced impact exposure. [23] The initiative is considered the most comprehensive student-athlete safety program in the country, incorporating advanced helmet technology, baseline cognitive testing, and expert clinical oversight. [23] Additionally, the program includes emergency action plan re-evaluation, traumatic head injury education, and CPR instructor training. [23] RNI physicians and Riddell representatives will personally fit students for the helmets and address any questions about the technology. [23]

The field for the WVU Medicine United Hospital Center Junior Championship was scheduled to be posted by Noon ET on Friday, June 13, 2025. [10], [30] This American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) event, sponsored by WVU Medicine United Hospital Center, is a prestigious tournament for top junior golfers aged 12-19. [5], [14] While the tournament itself is scheduled to take place from July 14th to 17th, 2025, at Bridgeport Country Club, the past week included important deadlines and announcements related to participation. [10], [30] The tournament will feature a field of 78 top junior golfers and includes an 18-hole qualifier, a practice round, and a Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament prior to the 54-hole stroke play competition.
