Thousands of Californians, including many who receive care at UCSF and its affiliate One Medical in the Bay Area, could face disruptions to their medical care due to a contract dispute between UC Health and Blue Shield of California. The disagreement centers on the reimbursement rates Blue Shield will pay for services provided by UC Health facilities, including hospitals and clinics. If a new agreement is not reached by July 10, 2025, patients insured by Blue Shield who use UC Health providers may need to find new health insurers or pay out-of-network costs. This potential contract termination affects various Blue Shield plans, including those for CalPERS members, employer plans, Covered California plans, and Medicare plans (including Medicare Advantage). While neither party specified the exact number of affected patients, it is estimated to be in the tens of thousands, with approximately 35,000 CalPERS members alone receiving care from UC Health through Blue Shield plans. Blue Shield stated that UC Health administrators decided to end the contract unless higher reimbursement rates are agreed upon, while Blue Shield aims for an agreement that ensures continued access at reasonable and affordable costs. One Medical, a UCSF affiliate, has notified its Bay Area members that their providers may no longer be in-network with Blue Shield as of July 10 if an agreement is not reached, expressing disappointment and exploring options to minimize disruption. UCSF Health community hospitals, Saint Francis and St. Mary's, are not impacted by these negotiations and will remain in-network. This dispute follows a similar contract negotiation last year between UC Health and Anthem Blue Cross. Services with UC Health through Blue Shield are expected to remain in-network through July 9, 2025.
