Northern Light Health has reported that negotiations with Anthem for a new contract have stalled. The current contract is set to expire on September 30, 2025. Northern Light Health has informed Anthem that the contract will expire on this date unless Anthem agrees to terms with adequate reimbursement. If the contract expires, Northern Light Health would become out-of-network for individuals with Anthem plans. For the next four months, Northern Light Health plans to assist patients and group policy holders in understanding their options for accessing necessary services if the contract expires. James Rohrbaugh, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Northern Light Health, stated that Anthem's reimbursements have seen an average annual increase of less than 1.5%, while the annual inflation rate for health services has averaged more than 7.5%. He argues that Anthem's reluctance to keep pace with the costs of providing care directly impacts the sustainability of rural healthcare. Northern Light Health highlights that reimbursement for services is crucial for keeping hospitals, practices, and services operational and staffed. As the largest commercial insurer in Maine, Anthem plays a significant role in the sustainability of health services in the state. Northern Light Health also noted that Anthem payment denials for care already provided have increased, while Anthem's profit margin in Maine increased by nearly 10% in 2024. More information and resources are available on the Northern Light Health website, and patients with specific questions can contact [email protected] or call 1-888-616-0039. [4]
