Penn Medicine successfully performed its first bilateral hand transplant since 2019, giving a 29-year-old Swiss man new hands 16 years after he lost his arms and legs to a major infection at age 12. This complex surgery, which took place at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, marked a significant milestone as the fifth hand transplant recipient at Penn Medicine. The journey leading up to the transplant was six years in the making and continued despite the hand transplant program being paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. Penn Medicine is recognized as a global leader in vascularized composite allotransplantation, having completed the most bilateral transplants in the United States and performing the world's first procedure of its kind on a child in partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. All five of Penn's hand transplant patients, three of whom are European, are reported to be thriving after their surgeries. The procedure involved a multidisciplinary team of over 20 experts from transplant, plastic, and orthopaedic surgery, anesthesia, and nursing.

Penn Medicine and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) are set to launch the Lurie Autism Institute following a significant $50 million donation from the Lurie family, headed by Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie. This substantial gift represents the largest single donation dedicated to autism research focusing on the entire lifespan at U.S. academic medical centers. The new institute aims to accelerate scientific discovery in autism by improving the understanding of its genetic and underlying processes, studying behavioral development across the lifespan, utilizing AI for identifying treatment targets and repurposing existing drugs, and conducting clinical trials. This initiative will support and expand the work of 47 existing autism research teams at Penn and CHOP, reinforcing their combined expertise and commitment to advancing care and understanding for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Penn Medicine is partnering with Cardiology Consultants of Philadelphia, Cardiovascular Logistics, and Surgical Care Affiliates Health to open a new outpatient cardiovascular surgical center in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The project, announced on May 29th and reported on recently, involves a $10 million investment and is expected to make cardiovascular care more accessible and efficient for patients in the Philadelphia region. The center will be a 13,100-square-foot facility equipped to handle complex procedures with advanced technology, including Philips Medical Azurion X-ray and hemodynamic systems. It will feature three operating rooms, one procedure room, and 12 pre- and post-operational bays. Penn Medicine will have a minority ownership interest in the venture and representation on the center's board and clinical oversight committees. This collaboration aligns with the growing trend of performing cardiovascular procedures in outpatient settings and Penn Medicine's strategy to provide high-quality care closer to patients' homes.
