Beacon Health System has become the first hospital in northern Indiana to implement the EOS Imaging System, a world-class spine imaging technology. This system utilizes 85% less radiation than traditional X-rays and provides highly detailed 2D and 3D images enhanced by AI. A collaboration between a Beacon Health System neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Smith, and a University of Notre Dame engineer has led to the development of a novel spinal fusion implant technology. Their medical device development company created a redesigned spacer for spinal fusion surgery made from a porous PEEK polymer with Hydroxyapatite (HA). This design makes the spacer more biofriendly, allowing bone to grow into it more effectively and promoting faster bone growth and fusion times compared to traditional spacers.
