Joon S. Lee, MD

Chief Executive Officer, Emory Healthcare

Started his position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Emory Healthcare on July 1, 2023, overseeing 11 hospitals, 250 provider locations, and more than 24,000 employees. [3, 9] He previously served as Executive Vice President and President of UPMC Physician Services, with a 25-year tenure at UPMC. [3, 4, 9]

Rock Anderson

Chief Human Resources Officer

Rock Anderson, Jr. is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Emory Healthcare, which he joined in September 2022. He has over 30 years of human resources and operational experience, including more than 15 years in HR leadership roles. Prior to his role at Emory Healthcare, he served as Chief Human Resources Officer at AutoNation from February 2020 to September 2022. Before AutoNation, he was the Senior Vice President, People Solutions for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) from May 2019 to February 2020. Anderson also spent 12 years in various HR and operational roles at Cox Automotive Inc., including serving as Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President from 2014 to 2018. His experience includes leadership positions at Siemens, Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo), and INROADS Inc. Anderson is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, and is a graduate of Dillard University and Tulane University. He is also a member of the Board of Directors at Carter's.

Christopher L. Augostini

Chief Financial Officer

Christopher L. Augostini serves as the Executive Vice President for Business and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for both Emory University and Emory Healthcare. He is also the Vice Chair of the Emory Healthcare Board of Directors. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic and financial integration of the Emory enterprise, focusing on operational and financial performance. Prior to his time at Emory, Augostini served as senior vice president and chief operating officer at Georgetown University from 2000 to 2017. During his 17-year tenure at Georgetown, he improved operating results, balance sheet metrics, and investment returns. He also initiated the first multi-year operating, capital, and financial plan there. Augostini has experience in government as well, having served as chief of staff to the first deputy mayor of New York City under Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and as deputy budget director and director of intergovernmental affairs overseeing the city's efforts in Washington, D.C., and Albany, New York. He also held positions within New York State, including principal budget analyst for the NYS Ways and Means Committee and program analyst for the NYS Assembly Higher Education Committee. He holds a master's degree in public policy analysis from the State University of New York at Albany. Augostini also serves on the Board of Directors for W. R. Berkley Corporation, an insurance holding company, since 2012. He is also a Director for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Clifton Casualty Insurance Co. Ltd., and Emory Innovations, Inc. His past board memberships include Emtech, Inc., and Midtown Alliance. His experience at senior levels in universities and government provides him with valuable business, leadership, management, operational, financial, and investment expertise.

Penny Z. Castellano, MD

President, Physician Division

Penny Z. Castellano, MD, FACOG, is the President of the Physician Division and interim Director of The Emory Clinic at Emory Healthcare, appointed in December 2023. In this role, she oversees strategic and operational aspects of all Emory Healthcare physician practices, acts as a liaison between Emory Healthcare and the School of Medicine, and serves as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Castellano has been a faculty member at Emory University School of Medicine since 1990, specializing in Gynecology and Obstetrics. She earned her MD from Emory in 1985 and completed her residency and fellowship there by 1989. With over 35 years of medical experience, her career at Emory includes leadership roles such as Associate Clinic Director and Chief Medical Officer for The Emory Clinic and Emory Specialty Associates, and various positions within the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, including Interim Chair. Her clinical focus is on preventative women's health and menopause management, with research interests in healthcare delivery, quality, and safety.

Heather Dexter

President, Regional Hospital Division

Named President of the Emory Healthcare Regional Hospital Division in October 2023. [5] She previously served as CEO of Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, where she began her career in 1998. [5]

Sharon Pappas, PhD, RN

Chief Nurse Executive

Sharon Pappas, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, is the Chief Nurse Executive for Emory Healthcare, a position she has held since 2016. In this role, she is responsible for nursing practice across Emory's hospitals, ambulatory care, and post-acute agencies, overseeing more than 8,000 nurses. She also holds a faculty position as a professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. With a nursing career spanning over 40 years, Dr. Pappas previously served as the system's chief nurse executive at Centura Health in Denver, Colorado, for 25 years, and held earlier nursing roles in Macon, Georgia. Dr. Pappas holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia, a Master of Science in Nursing from Georgia College, and a PhD in nursing from the University of Colorado. Her doctoral research focused on the relationship between nurse staffing and organizational outcomes. A prominent figure in nursing leadership, she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and has contributed to national committees focused on improving patient care and clinician well-being. She has held leadership roles within the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) and represents the organization on the Commission on Magnet Recognition for the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dr. Pappas was honored with the AONL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. She has also been recognized with the Georgia Hospital Association's Hospital Hero Award. Her work includes numerous publications and presentations on the impact of nurses and the nursing environment on patient outcomes and hospital costs. She has been a key leader in achieving Magnet recognition for Emory Healthcare facilities.

Alistair Erskine, MD, MBA

Chief Information & Digital Officer

Dr. Alistair Erskine is the Chief Information and Digital Officer at Emory Healthcare and Vice President for Digital Health at Emory University. In these roles, he leads Emory's digital transformation, focusing on a platform-based and experience-led strategy to enhance patient, care team, and research experiences using advanced technologies, including AI. Before joining Emory, Dr. Erskine was the Chief Digital Officer at Mass General Brigham and held a faculty position at Harvard Medical School, where he still teaches clinical informatics and digital health. His previous positions include serving as Chief Informatics Officer at Geisinger Health System and Associate Dean of Medical Informatics at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also has international experience, having worked as Chief of Health Informatics in Qatar. Dr. Erskine received his MD from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Brown University. He holds triple board certifications in Internal Medicine, Clinical Informatics, and Pediatrics. Additionally, he earned an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, specializing in Business Analytics and AI. He is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.
