Steven D. Shapiro, MD

Senior Vice President for Health Affairs

Appointed Senior Vice President for Health Affairs in May 2021. Shapiro directly oversees Keck Medicine of USC and the Keck School of Medicine of USC, working closely with the Office of the Provost and the university's senior leadership team and serving as a critical member of the USC Health System Board. Rodney B. Hanners

CEO, Keck Medicine of USC

Appointed CEO of Keck Medicine of USC after serving as interim CEO. He is responsible for oversight of USC's clinical activities, including USC Care Medical Group, Keck Medical Center (Keck Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Hospital), USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, USC Arcadia Hospital, and more than 67 outpatient clinics and other clinical practices and joint ventures. Chris Allen

Chief Financial Officer

Chris Allen serves as the Chief Financial Officer at Keck Medicine of USC. He officially began this role on August 31, 2023, having previously served as interim CFO for Keck Medicine and CFO for Keck Medical Center of USC. Allen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and finance from the University of Georgia and a certificate in direct costing and contribution reporting from the University of Wisconsin School of Business. He has over 20 years of finance leadership experience, primarily in healthcare. His tenure at Keck Medicine of USC began in 2016 as the executive administrator for financial planning and decision support. In his current role, he is responsible for strategic financial plans, financial and governmental reporting, budgeting, funds flow, revenue cycle, and material management. He also leads financial initiatives aimed at ensuring growth and stability. Before joining Keck Medicine of USC, Allen held CFO positions at Adventist Health Glendale Medical Center and served as interim CFO at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. He was recognized as a Rising Star CFO of the Year by the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2022. Allen played a significant role in navigating the financial challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Krist Azizian, PharmD, MHA

Chief Pharmacy Officer

Krist Azizian, PharmD, MHA, serves as the Chief Pharmacy Officer for Keck Medicine of USC, a role he assumed in June 2023, expanding on his previous position as chief pharmacy officer for Keck Medical Center of USC. He also holds the title of executive director of health systems for the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Azizian's background includes serving as chief regional oncology officer for USC Care and Ambulatory Services, where he was instrumental in developing Keck Medicine's presence in surrounding communities and launching expanded oncology services. Prior to joining Keck Medicine, he held director of pharmacy services positions at Providence Tarzana Medical Center and West Hills Hospital and Medical Center. His earlier career included roles as Clinical Manager and Clinical Pharmacist at CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. Academically, Krist Azizian holds a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Bachelor of Science in Gerontology from the University of Southern California, as well as an Executive Master of Health Administration from the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.

Tom Bates, MBA, RN

Chief Quality Officer

Serves as the health system's first chief quality officer. [2] Works with leaders across the health system to develop a Keck Medicine of USC Quality Institute dedicated to ensuring excellence in the approach to quality, safety and clinical effectiveness. [2] Holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from California State University, Fresno and a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University. [2]

Shannon Bradley, MBA

Chief Health Equity, Inclusion and Community Officer

Shannon Bradley, MBA, is the inaugural Chief Health Equity, Inclusion and Community Officer at Keck Medicine of USC, having been appointed as the health system's first chief diversity and inclusion officer in September 2022. She is responsible for strategic planning and leadership to promote inclusion, health equity, and workforce development, as well as building community and external partnerships. Bradley's background is rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a personal mission driven by past experiences facing healthcare disparities as a single Black mother. Before joining Keck Medicine of USC, she served as the assistant vice president and division director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for HCA Healthcare's Gulf Coast Division in Houston, Texas. In that role, she significantly increased the diversity of the health system's board members and launched employee networks. She also initiated a health equity collaboration that improved maternal health outcomes for women of color. Bradley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Emporia State University and an MBA with a health care administration specialization from Baylor University. At Keck Medicine of USC, she has been instrumental in revising the DEI initiative around four pillars: Health Equity, Employees, Supplier Diversity, and Community. She also chairs the Health Equity, Inclusion, and Community Executive Steering Committee and advocates for employee resource groups.

Tammy Capretta, RN, MPH

Chief Transformation and Risk Officer

Tammy Capretta, RN, MPH, serves as the Chief Transformation and Risk Officer at Keck Medicine of USC. She began her career as a public health nurse before joining Keck Medicine in 1991 as the chief operating officer for USC Care Medical Group. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Texas Christian University and a master's degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles. In her role as Chief Transformation and Risk Officer, Capretta is responsible for evaluating potential partnerships, leading cultural transformation, and overseeing risk management, compliance, and clinical staff credentialing for the growing health system. She is in charge of four offices: the Office of Integrated Risk Management, the Office of Integrated Credentialing, the Care for the Caregiver Office, and the Office of Healthcare Compliance. Her efforts have been crucial in integrating new entities into Keck Medicine and have helped the health system achieve national recognition for its Culture of Safety initiative. Capretta also leads healthcare compliance within the USC Office of Ethics and Compliance. Her past roles include serving as chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Compliance Officers' Forum and speaking for President Barack Obama's task force on Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program.

TJ Malseed

Chief Information Officer

Timothy James (TJ) Malseed is the Chief Information Officer for Keck Medicine of USC, where he has also served as Chief Health Information Officer and Associate Dean for Information Services at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He oversees information management, technology, and cybersecurity across the medical enterprise, including growth and operations for information systems at hospital sites, ambulatory locations, and office-based practices. Malseed joined Keck Medicine in 2016. Prior to his time at Keck Medicine, Malseed spent over a decade at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) starting in 2004. At CHLA, he held positions including Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Chief Applications Officer. With 20 years of experience in IT, he was responsible for the strategy and direction of CHLA's technology efforts and led numerous clinical, revenue cycle, financial, human resources, and research technology initiatives. His accomplishments at CHLA included achieving HIMSS Stage 6 recognition and contributing to the hospital being named a "Most Wired" hospital. He was also involved in implementing online portals for patients and physicians. Malseed holds a Bachelor's degree in International Business with a minor in Computer Science from the University of California, Davis. His earlier career included roles at the City of Glendale, Inktomi, and Oracle's PeopleSoft. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Pediatric Leadership Council for Cerner Corporation.

Felipe Osorno

Chief Post-Acute Officer and Chief of Staff

Felipe Osorno serves as the Chief Post-Acute Care Officer and Chief of Staff at Keck Medicine of USC. In this capacity, he provides executive oversight of the post-acute care service line, working with hospital leaders on strategies involving partnerships, technology, and performance management. He is also responsible for developing and nurturing partnerships with skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, and coordinating access to inpatient rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals. As Chief of Staff, Osorno works with clinical and operational leaders on systemwide strategic and performance improvement initiatives. He has over 15 years of healthcare leadership experience, with nearly a decade at Keck Medicine of USC, where he has focused on developing a process improvement culture. His work has contributed to improvements in length-of-stay performance. Osorno played a key role in the university's COVID-19 vaccination efforts, leading operations that delivered a significant number of vaccines. He is also involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives, having helped establish the Keck Pride employee resource group and currently serving as the executive sponsor for La Voz, the health system's Hispanic and Latinx ERG. He has also been involved in developing collaborations to improve access to care for the transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse community. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from McGill University and a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering practice from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to his work in healthcare, he worked in consulting, focusing on operational excellence and strategy in various industries. His entry into healthcare was influenced by a volunteer experience in a hospital setting.

Ernie Schwefler

Chief Contracting, Managed Care & Payer Relations Officer

Ernie Schwefler is the Chief Contracting, Managed Care & Payer Relations Officer at Keck Medicine of USC. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic management of contracting, managed care, and value-based program activities, overseeing the value-based services organization, and managing relationships with providers and payers. He focuses on increasing access to Keck Medicine's services by creating and securing optimal contractual reimbursement structures and participating in strategic networks and collaborations. Prior to joining Keck Medicine, Schwefler was the regional vice president of provider engagement and contracting for Anthem's network management team in California, where he was responsible for deploying contracting initiatives and managing the HMO strategy program team and payment innovations. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from California Lutheran University.

Shawn Sheffield, MBA, MHSA

Chief Strategy Officer, Keck Medicine of USC

Responsible for the health system's clinical strategies and expansion efforts. Leads clinical growth, health system marketing and communications, and business development. Oversees health care mergers and acquisitions, including partnerships, capital and venture planning, clinical integration, physician alignment strategies, and expanding patients' access to Keck Medicine throughout Southern California and Las Vegas. Ekta Vyas, PhD

CHRO

Ekta Vyas, PhD, is the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) at Keck Medicine of USC, a role she assumed in July 2022. She is responsible for developing and executing human resources strategies across the health system, serving as a key executive liaison, and leading integration efforts, including that of USC Arcadia Hospital. With a career spanning over 28 years, nearly two decades of which have been in academic medical centers, Dr. Vyas has extensive experience in HR and organizational leadership. Prior to joining Keck Medicine of USC, she served as the Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer at UC Davis Health, where she launched employee initiatives and contributed to health equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. Before her time at UC Davis Health, she spent 14 years in various HR leadership roles at Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children's Health. Dr. Vyas holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from San Jose State University and a Doctorate in Organization and Management from Capella University. She is also an adjunct management faculty member at the USC Marshall School of Business and has previously taught at San Jose State University's Lucas College and Graduate School of Business. Her expertise includes strategic HR management, transformational change, leadership, and talent management. She is also a certified Emotional Intelligence practitioner and has served on various advisory boards and councils.
