The closure of St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center in Phoenix has caused significant challenges for families seeking care for loved ones with serious mental illnesses due to a severe lack of hospital beds in the valley. The state health department shut down St. Luke's in August after an investigation revealed safety violations. The closure resulted in the transfer of nearly 100 patients to other facilities, including Phoenix Medical Psychiatric Hospital. Families are finding it difficult to secure court-ordered treatment, with limited options available unless a patient becomes violent or severely disconnected from reality. While the state health department stated they had not seen an indication of a lack of access to behavioral health beds within a hospital setting, families and advocates argue that the system, already at a breaking point, is now severely impacted by the loss of St. Luke's capacity. Steward Health Care, the parent company of St. Luke's, had filed for bankruptcy in May, and although Honor Health took over operations at other Steward hospitals in Arizona, the future of the behavioral health center remains uncertain.

Due to bed shortages and inadequate care at other facilities in metro Phoenix, patients with serious mental illness are reportedly at risk. The closure of St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center in Phoenix exacerbated this issue. As of August, St. Luke's had furloughed over 200 employees, leading to 127 beds becoming inoperable and the transfer of more than 70 patients to other facilities, including the Phoenix Medical Psychiatric Hospital (PMPH), which is part of NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals. [8] PMPH, with a total of 96 beds, experienced increased demand and had limited availability, particularly for its 24 involuntary treatment beds. [8] The demand for beds at PMPH had more than doubled in the three years prior to this situation. [8]
