A bankruptcy judge has approved a plan that could lead to salary increases for top executives at Prospect Medical Holdings, the parent company of Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), which includes Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital. This decision comes as Prospect faces bankruptcy proceedings and actively seeks to sell its Connecticut hospitals. A representative for a group of creditors, including the state of Connecticut and union members from Waterbury Hospital (also owned by Prospect), supported the executive incentive plan, arguing it is necessary to maintain the smooth operation of the hospitals while potential buyers are being sought. There are reportedly at least four interested parties in acquiring the Connecticut properties. The judge stated that the incentive amounts were not excessive and were consistent with similar bankruptcy cases. Prospect intends to name a "stalking horse" bidder by the end of June to establish a minimum price for the sale, with auction dates expected to be announced within weeks. Deadlines for sale hearings have been extended to accommodate a fourth potential purchaser's due diligence. While employees hope for a better future under new ownership, they are wary of involvement from private-equity firms like Prospect. Efforts to introduce greater state regulation of private equity firms purchasing Connecticut hospitals did not pass in the recent legislative session, but state officials have pledged increased scrutiny of future deals. Investment banking firm Houlihan Lokey Capital is working with Prospect's landlord, Medical Properties Trust, and other parties to expedite the hospital sales. [20]
