Bruce J. Flanz, President and CEO of MediSys Health Network, participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare on June 3rd. The discussion, which also included Michael J. Fosina, President of Calvary Hospital, and Shelly Anderson, President of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, focused on the importance of safeguarding compassion and the emotional well-being of healthcare professionals. Mr. Fosina highlighted that at Calvary, where the focus is on end-of-life care, they value well-being, empathy, and shared purpose among staff. He added that support from leadership through programs like Schwartz Rounds helps raise the standard of care. The panel emphasized that the sustained health of all caregivers is paramount to providing compassionate patient care and leads to improved experiences for patients, families, and everyone involved. Schwartz Rounds are described as forums where healthcare staff from all disciplines can discuss the emotional and social challenges of patient care, fostering empathy, support, and improved well-being amongst colleagues. MediSys Health Network announced the winners of their "Good Catch Award" on June 2, 2025. This award recognizes employees who have taken action to prevent accidents from occurring, thereby enhancing patient safety and ensuring exceptional care. The actions can include maintaining safe facilities, correcting medication orders, preventing patient falls, or reporting significant changes in a patient's status. The individuals congratulated for this award were Mariusz Baczewski, a Radiology Tech at Jamaica Hospital, Travis Humes, a PI Specialist at Jamaica Hospital, and Maritza Guerrero, a Nursing Attendant at Flushing Hospital. The announcement also referenced previous employee recognition programs, including the "CARE Award Recipients" from May 22, 2025, which recognizes employees for receiving positive written remarks from patients or their loved ones for high-quality and compassionate care, and the "SEIP Award Winners" who contribute to the success of infection control initiatives. Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has opened its newly renovated inpatient pediatric unit. The new space, located on the fifth floor, was designed with an emphasis on comfort, safety, and privacy for young patients and their families. The unit is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring technology and includes 13 beds, among which are two isolation rooms featuring a HEPA filtration system for enhanced air quality and infection control. During the renovation period, pediatric patients requiring admission were cared for at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, also part of the MediSys Health Network. Hospital leadership expressed that this new unit reaffirms Jamaica Hospital's commitment to providing high-quality care for children in the community and offers a world-class facility for their medical team. Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has been recognized as a Center of Excellence (COE) in Lung Cancer Screening by GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2). This designation highlights Jamaica Hospital's dedication to providing patient-centered, evidence-based lung cancer screening services to the Queens community. Lung cancer remains a significant health challenge, with many cases diagnosed at advanced stages. In response, Jamaica Hospital launched a comprehensive lung cancer screening program in 2024 aimed at early detection, particularly targeting the high-risk population it serves in an effort to reduce disparities in lung cancer outcomes, as socioeconomic barriers often prevent individuals in this community from accessing timely screenings. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a substantial state investment of $180 million (also reported as $188 million) to support the creation of a comprehensive cancer center at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. This significant funding is intended to establish the first comprehensive cancer care center in Queens, with the goal of providing world-class cancer treatment locally, thereby reducing the need for Queens residents to travel to Manhattan for specialized care. The project builds upon MediSys Health Network's existing collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). The planned 90,000-square-foot facility will include a state-of-the-art Radiation and Infusion Therapy Campus, expanding the clinical expertise available in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology through the partnership with MSKCC.
