Funding for a new state-owned mental health hospital, where University Health would operate beds, was cut by House Republican lawmakers as part of broader budget reductions totaling approximately $500 million for construction projects across Missouri. This $300 million project, initially approved in 2023, aims to replace the current Center for Behavioral Health facility, which is partly leased by University Health and has been described by lawmakers as being in dire disrepair. University Health President and CEO Charlie Shields, however, expressed confidence that the funding will be restored and the project will proceed without delay, potentially being included in an upcoming special session. The new hospital is planned to have 200 beds and increase short-term psychiatric care capacity in the Kansas City area, while the current facility would support longer-term patients. The cut has drawn significant criticism from lawmakers across both parties due to the existing shortage of psychiatric hospital beds leading to individuals with mental health issues being held in emergency rooms and jails. The Missouri Department of Mental Health anticipates the hospital could open in late 2027 or early 2028, assuming funding is secured and other potential roadblocks, such as the sale of the former park land from the Housing Authority of Kansas City, MO, are resolved.

University Health has successfully maintained its designation as a Level IV maternal center by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). This is the highest level achievable for maternal care and University Health has held this designation since 2019. The redesignation, which is valid for three years, signifies University Health's ability to provide the highest level of specialized care for pregnant patients, including those with complex medical conditions. This is complemented by their Level IV neonatal intensive care unit. In 2024, University Health delivered 5,574 babies at their new Women's & Children's Hospital, which offers comprehensive care in a state-of-the-art facility.
