Saint Francis Health System and the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Medical Authority are partnering to establish a Level I Trauma Center in Tulsa. This collaboration is made possible through recently passed state legislation, House Bill 2784 and House Bill 2793, which create a formal public-private partnership for the development of a Level I Trauma Center in Eastern Oklahoma. According to the American Trauma Society, a Level I Trauma Center provides comprehensive care for all aspects of injury, from prevention through rehabilitation. This new center is expected to significantly enhance access to the highest level of emergency care for residents in Eastern Oklahoma, potentially reducing the need to transport critically injured patients to Oklahoma City or other distant locations. Officials emphasized that having a Level I Trauma Center in Tulsa will mean faster, more coordinated emergency response, which is crucial when dealing with life-threatening injuries. Saint Francis has been working towards establishing a Level I Trauma Center for over a decade and is currently in the final stages of preparing for adult Level I Trauma verification by the American College of Surgeons, with a survey anticipated this year. Following the adult verification, they will pursue pediatric Level I Trauma verification. The partnership with OSU Medical Authority will also support the training of future physicians. Leaders from both Saint Francis and the state highlighted the importance of this development for patient safety and access to care closer to home.
