In response to a federal executive order impacting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at federally funded institutions, UW Health, along with other Wisconsin healthcare systems, has adjusted the language used on its website and in its programming. [16, 17] UW Health has transitioned from using explicit DEI and "anti-racism" terminology to focusing on "Social Impact and Belonging." [16] This change involved removing mentions of "anti-racism" from the website and renaming related modules, such as replacing "Being a leader in anti-racism" with "Being a social impact leader" and "anti-racism funding" with "Community giving." [16] UW Health officials, including Chief Social Impact Officer Shiva Bidar-Sielaff and CEO Alan Kaplan, released a statement and video explaining that "social impact and belonging" better align with the organization's core mission, values, and strategies as a healthcare provider. [17] They clarified that social impact, in their context, refers to how healthcare policies and practices influence the well-being of individuals and communities, aiming to improve health outcomes, access to care, and overall quality of life. [17] This shift, while described by UW Health as an evolution to ensure mission-focused priorities endure politically, has raised concerns among advocacy groups in Wisconsin regarding its potential impact on communities. [16, 17]

UW Health recently recognized several physicians with the 2025 UW Health Physician Excellence Awards. [19] These annual awards celebrate physicians who have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication across clinical practice, education, and leadership, embodying the mission and values of UW Health. [19] Among the honorees were two faculty members from the Department of Pediatrics. [19] Dr. Janet Legare, a professor in the Divisions of Genetics and Metabolism and Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitative Medicine, received a Clinical Practice Excellence Award for her significant impact on children with rare genetic bone disorders, particularly achondroplasia, and for developing medical guidelines to support these children in schools and communities. [19] Dr. Daniel O’Connell, an associate professor and interim chief in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, was honored with a Regional Services Excellence Award for his transformative leadership in expanding pediatric gastroenterology services and increasing access to specialized care for families throughout the region. [19] The awards ceremony took place on May 21. [19]
