A new research project, titled β€œUniversal belonging: A place-based intervention to reduce loneliness,” is launching this year in Louisville with the goal of tackling the public health challenge of loneliness among older adults. [7, 11] Loneliness is recognized as a serious risk to the health and well-being of older adults, linked to increased risks of depression, cognitive decline, chronic illness, and premature mortality. [7] This project is an application of the data-driven approach developed through the Universal Basic Neighborhood (UBN) project, which identified social connection as crucial for healthy communities and loneliness among seniors as a critical health risk. [7] The initiative will use demographic, clinical, and environmental data to address this challenge. [7] Lauren Anderson, a UofL researcher, developed the place-based data model for this work. [7] The project involves collaboration with Nancy Seay, Ph.D., from The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. Center for Racial Justice and the Department of Sociology at Simmons College of Kentucky, who will lead the asset mapping and community-based research components. [7] Their work will focus on identifying social needs and existing assets in selected neighborhoods to ground the study in the lived experience and local context of older adults. [7] Researchers will work with community partners to test neighborhood-based strategies aimed at fostering social connection and gather insights on how local infrastructure and community design influence emotional well-being in aging populations. [7] Funding for this project is provided by the Humana Foundation. [7] Target neighborhoods are still being identified, and the project team is seeking collaborating organizations that serve seniors. [7] Seniors can enroll in the study by taking the Baseline Loneliness Survey, which is expected to be available in July 2025. [7]
