Meritus Health has launched a new initiative called the Meritus Food Farmacy, aimed at improving patient health through diet and education. This program is designed to help combat food insecurity and teach patients about healthy eating habits. Primary care and specialist providers at Meritus will be able to prescribe healthy food to patients based on their medical diagnoses. Once a prescription is issued, a Meritus Food Farmacy team member will arrange for the patient to pick up a pre-sorted bag of perishable and nonperishable food and recipes from a kiosk in the Robinwood Professional Center atrium. The food bag is valued at approximately $50 per week and is provided free to patients with a prescription for 8 weeks or more. Patients will also have access to weekly cooking demonstrations and one-on-one sessions with a Registered Dietitian. According to Beth Fields Dowdell, DNP, CRNP, director of Community Health and Outpatient Care Management at Meritus Health, the Food Farmacy is intended to support patients managing chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease by prescribing nutritious, condition-specific foods as part of their treatment plan. Food insecurity is a significant social determinant of health in Washington County, with around 3,000 Meritus patients reporting concerns and about 1,200 documented with malnutrition. The program aims to improve access to healthy foods based on medical diagnosis, increase understanding of nutrition, and ultimately improve health outcomes. Patients' progress will be evaluated in follow-up visits with their primary care provider or if they are admitted to the hospital. [3, 7, 13]
