Jun 11, 2025
Healthcare workers from the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1199, and Communication Workers of America (CWA) who work throughout the NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) Health System have been speaking out and demanding an immediate end to staffing cuts. A press release from NYSNA on June 11, 2025, detailed that NYP announced a 2% staffing cut across the system on May 5, impacting over 1,000 healthcare workers, including approximately 200 frontline caregivers represented by NYSNA and 1199SEIU. These cuts reportedly include 65 NYSNA nurses and nurse practitioners and 121 1199SEIU caregivers across four campuses: NYP-Columbia, NYP-Brooklyn Methodist, NYP-Hudson Valley, and NYP-Queens. The unions argue that these cuts will lead to a loss of healthcare services, specifically mentioning impacts on care for children and terminally ill patients, the consolidation of regional labs, the closure of an entire palliative care unit, and the closure of a pediatric infusion center at the NYP-Columbia campus. The healthcare workers are demanding the reinstatement of laid-off professionals and an investment in safe patient care, highlighting that NYP is a financially stable institution with executives earning high salaries, and arguing the cuts are a preemptive measure based on potential future challenges rather than current necessity. A rally was held earlier in the week, as reported on June 16, 2025, where affected workers voiced their opposition to the planned layoffs.
