UChicago and UChicago Medicine are supporting several community events in recognition of Juneteenth. Among the activities highlighted is a storytelling event at the Chicago Public Library's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Branch, where UChicago and UChicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital are providing a book giveaway and snacks. Additionally, Care2Prevent, which appears to be affiliated with UChicago Medicine, offered free HIV and STI screenings, as well as sexual health education, at the 6th annual Juneteenth Family Festival of Beverly/Morgan Park. These initiatives are part of the broader University of Chicago 2025 Juneteenth Celebration funding program aimed at recognizing the holiday and engaging with the community. [17]

A proposal to expand Cardiac Catheterization services at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook is under review by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board. The project, with an estimated cost of over $21.6 million, involves constructing a new building on the hospital campus to accommodate the expanded program and other support services. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board staff findings regarding this proposal were made available to the public on June 10, 2025, ahead of the tentative consideration of the project by the board scheduled for June 24, 2025. The family of David O'Donnell, a construction worker who died in a scaffolding collapse at the University of Chicago Medical Center campus in June 2024, has reached a $23.5 million settlement in their lawsuit. O'Donnell, 27, died and his coworker Jeffrey Spyrka was critically injured when they fell over 80 feet at the site of the planned cancer pavilion. The lawsuit contended that the scaffolding was deficient and that the contractors, Turner Construction and Adjustable Concrete Construction, failed to implement proper safety measures. Attorneys for the O'Donnell family stated that the scaffold was not properly connected to the building and failed during a wind gust significantly lower than its supposed capacity. While this settlement resolves the O'Donnell family's claims, other lawsuits related to the incident are reportedly still pending. [8]

The University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division and Pritzker School of Medicine recently held their convocation ceremonies, recognizing the achievements of their graduating students. During these events, several PhD and MD graduates were honored with divisional and program awards for their outstanding research projects and scientific presentations. The ceremonies also served as a point of reference to acknowledge previous significant recognitions, such as the election of Selwyn O. Rogers Jr., MD, MPH, to the National Academy of Medicine's 2024 class in October. The University of Chicago has received a $21 million gift from philanthropist Thea Berggren to establish the Berggren Center for Quantum Biology and Medicine. This new center will merge quantum technology with biology with the goal of transforming future medicine and patient care. The interdisciplinary effort aims to use quantum engineering to perform highly sensitive measurements within the human body to gain new insights into biology and disease that were previously unattainable. The center will support fellowships for interdisciplinary scholars, fund technical development projects, and host global conferences. Researchers are already collaborating on projects such as using quantum-enabled identifiers to observe individual immune cells in real time. The center will draw on UChicago Medicine's expertise in biomedical research and clinical care to help translate quantum breakthroughs from research to patient care.
