The former St. John's Hospital facility in Salina, which was the subject of a lawsuit between Salina Regional Health Center and the City of Salina regarding its proposed demolition, has been sold. Salina Regional Health Center announced the completion of the sale of the property to an out-of-town developer. This sale follows a dispute that began when the Salina City Commission denied the hospital's request to demolish the building on November 17th of a prior year, despite the Salina Heritage Commission having previously approved demolition plans due to the high cost of restoration. The hospital had filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the city commission's action, arguing it denied Salina Regional its basic property rights. Hospital officials had previously attempted to find an alternative use for the building since 2002 and had even signed a real estate purchase contract in March with a company planning to convert it into affordable senior housing, but that plan did not materialize. The former hospital was not on any state or national register of historic places but was designated locally as part of the Heritage Conservation District, requiring a Certificate of Appropriateness for removal. Salina Regional stated that while it hoped to avoid legal action, the commission's decision left them no choice, as the expense of legal action takes money away from patient care. The recent sale indicates a resolution to this long-standing issue concerning the property.

The Salina Regional Health Foundation has provided additional funding towards Kansas Wesleyan University's project to establish a Nursing Education Center. This contribution is in addition to a previous $1 million donation from Salina Regional Health Center, which included both cash and a former physician's office building. The combined contributions from the hospital and its foundation now total $2.4 million for the $4.5 million renovation project. This project also recently received a $750,000 challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation last week and a $1 million gift from the Jack and Donna Vanier family in June. A Salina man was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with non-life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Burma Road. According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 65-year-old Johnny Schneider was driving a 2012 Honda Civic southbound in the 4200 block of Burma Road on Wednesday, June 5th, when he lost control of the vehicle after exiting, causing it to enter a ditch and roll over three times before landing back on its tires. Schneider was properly restrained and transported by EMS to the hospital. There was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred around 2:47 pm. [8, 9]
