In the event a new agreement is not reached by May 23, 2025, Shannon assures that they will continue to see all BCBS patients, preventing any immediate changes or impact to their care during the negotiation process [3]. This negotiation only applies to services provided at Shannon Medical Center facilities, not including emergency care, Shannon Clinic provider offices, or Shannon Urgent Care services [3]. Shannon Medical Center received its fifth consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers [16, 18, 19]. This distinction recognizes Shannon's work to prioritize patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors in the hospital [19]. Shannon is the only hospital in the west Texas region to achieve an “A” rating for the Spring of 2024 [19].

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) is currently in contract negotiations with Shannon Medical Center [12]. If an agreement is not reached by May 23, 2025, Shannon Medical Center and Shannon Medical Center South Campus in San Angelo will no longer participate in the HealthSelectSM network [12]. This could lead to higher out-of-pocket costs for services incurred after May 22, 2025, as claims might be treated as out-of-network [12]. Emergency service coverage will remain at the in-network benefit level [12]. Facility providers, Shannon Clinic and its providers are not affected by this negotiation [12]. Patients may be eligible for continuity of care under certain conditions, such as treatment for a serious condition, institutional care, scheduled surgery, pregnancy, or terminal illness [12].
