Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana announced a new, multi-year provider network agreement. This agreement ensures long-term access to affordable healthcare for SJHS patients covered by Anthem health plans. As part of the agreement, SJHS and Anthem will enhance collaboration on initiatives such as advanced data connectivity and value-based care (VBC) models aimed at improving health outcomes and controlling costs. They will incorporate the Epic Payer Platform to streamline secure patient data flow, improve operational efficiency, accelerate approval processes, and ultimately improve patient outcomes by reducing administrative tasks for medical teams. Both organizations expressed excitement about the agreement, noting it was reached without disruption to patient care access. This new agreement expands upon their previous work in VBC delivery and quality-based payment models, moving towards healthcare models that align payment with improved health outcomes and reduced cost trends.

Humana and Saint Joseph Health System are currently renegotiating their contract. Members with Humana Medicare Advantage Plans received a letter indicating that if an agreement is not reached by January 1, 2025, Saint Joseph Health System will be out-of-network for these plans. This potential change does not affect Humana Medicare Supplement Plans. All Saint Joseph Health System hospitals, facilities, and employed providers would be impacted if an agreement is not reached, including Saint Joseph Health System – Mishawaka Medical Center and Saint Joseph Health System – Plymouth Medical Center, and Saint Joseph Medical Group. Patients are advised not to delay care and are reminded that emergency care will always be considered in-network. During the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period (Oct. 15, 2024, through Dec. 7, 2024), affected members with Humana Medicare Advantage plans can consider enrolling in an alternative Medicare Advantage plan that includes Saint Joseph Health System in its network for 2025. As of the date of this news, Saint Joseph Health System currently has contracts with Anthem, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare (though the UnitedHealthcare contract ended July 1, 2024, as per other news).

Saint Joseph Health System has expanded and is further implementing its Together Connected Virtual Care program, which incorporates virtual nurses into patient care. This program, initially started around March 2023, adds a new element to ensure patient safety and provide direct accessibility to nursing staff. The virtual patient care team consists of a registered nurse, a virtual registered nurse, and a care partner who collaborate with a focus on patient safety and satisfaction. The health system is actively seeking experienced nurses for these virtual roles, highlighting that the program is an addition to, not a replacement for, bedside care and helps address the critical national nurse shortage by supporting both new and existing nurses.

A small electrical fire occurred in the Medical Office Building attached to Saint Joseph Health System Mishawaka Medical Center. The fire, which started on the first floor above the ceiling, caused a power outage in the building, leading to the temporary closure of several medical offices and departments, including physician offices, breast center diagnostics, outpatient MRI, and pediatric therapy. Saint Joseph Health System President Chris Karam stated that while the hospital was unaffected and remained open, the health system had to rely on the building's owner for repairs. Efforts were made to reschedule patient appointments and communicate updates.
