Memorial Health System's lawsuit against West Virginia University Hospitals and WVU Medicine Camden Clark is set to continue following a recent ruling by the West Virginia Supreme Court. This development allows the litigation to move forward after a previous pause. The lawsuit stems from allegations made by Memorial Health System claiming that some leadership within the university health system and Camden Clark Medical Center supported efforts to file false claims against Memorial. Memorial Health System asserts that the resulting investigation caused significant costs to both the system and the community. [15, 19] Memorial's CEO, Scott Cantley, expressed a desire for the community to be aware of the situation and for those responsible to be held accountable for what he described as incredibly poor business ethics and behavior. Memorial had previously settled a related lawsuit against former Camden Clark CEO Mike King, former hospital legal counsel Todd A. Kruger, and Dr. Michael Roberts. The original complaint alleged they collaborated to make false accusations that Memorial was violating federal law through physician compensation arrangements designed to induce referrals. [15]

Stroke is noted as the fifth leading cause of death in Ohio and the sixth in West Virginia, with regional rates exceeding the national average. According to Dr. Daniel E. O’Connell, Neurologist, Neurohospitalist, and Memorial Health System’s Stroke Program Medical Director, the certification underscores the team's sustained adherence to specific standards that enhance stroke care in the Mid-Ohio Valley. The Primary Stroke Center certification is awarded to facilities that demonstrate the capability to provide quick evaluation and advanced treatment for individuals experiencing a stroke.

Memorial Health System (MHS) held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 30, 2025, for the new Sistersville General Hospital in Sistersville, West Virginia, according to a news release. The 30,000-square-foot replacement hospital is planned to house a lab and diagnostic testing center, a 4,500-square-foot emergency department (ED), eight inpatient rooms, and community rooms for classes and meetings. A signed opinion was issued on May 14, 2025, in the case of Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Inc. v. Marietta Area Healthcare, Inc. This relates to a lawsuit filed by Marietta Area Healthcare, Inc., Marietta Memorial Hospital, and Marietta Healthcare Physicians, Inc. against Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital Corporation, WVU Hospitals, and WVU Health System. The lawsuit alleges that Camden-Clark attempted to cause economic harm to Marietta by initiating and pursuing a false 'qui tam' action (a type of lawsuit where a person reports fraud against the government) against them. The claims in the lawsuit include malicious prosecution, tortious interference, abuse of process, and negligent supervision. The United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia denied Camden-Clark's motion to dismiss most of the claims, and the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia held that a claim for negligent supervision is viable under West Virginia law, clarifying its elements.
