Community Hospital Corporation (CHC) President and CEO Jim Kendrick, along with other rural health executives, recently traveled to Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. to express their concerns regarding the potential impact of significant Medicaid cuts. Kendrick emphasized that while Republicans are discussing legislation that could include Medicaid work requirements, limited eligibility, and capped provider taxes with the aim of reducing federal spending, these proposed cuts could have devastating consequences for rural communities. He argued that saving one dollar through Medicaid reductions could result in a five-dollar negative economic impact on a rural community, potentially forcing hospitals to reduce services or even close. CHC, a Plano, Texas-based health system that owns, manages, and consults with over two dozen nonprofit rural hospitals, has been proactively assisting these facilities in managing expenses in anticipation of potential cuts. According to a recent report, Medicaid accounts for a median of 9.3% of a rural hospital's revenue. Kendrick stated that many rural providers would be unable to sustain a decrease in Medicaid enrollment and lower reimbursement rates, even with cost-cutting measures. He described the advocacy efforts on the federal level as some of the strongest he has witnessed. [3]
