Commonwealth Radiology Associates (CRA) has announced a new partnership with Heywood Healthcare, the independent, community-owned healthcare system based in Gardner, MA. This collaboration signifies an expansion of CRA's presence in Massachusetts and involves them assuming management of Heywood Healthcare's imaging service line. The partnership includes Heywood Healthcare's two hospitals, Heywood Hospital in Gardner and Athol Hospital, as well as its nine satellite facilities located across north central Massachusetts and into New Hampshire. CRA began providing radiology coverage at Heywood on February 1, 2025, and officially took over management of the imaging service line on June 1, 2025. As part of the agreement, Commonwealth Radiology Associates will independently operate The Imaging Center at Heywood Hospital, and senior Heywood Hospital radiology staff will be retained and employed by CRA. This partnership is seen as vital for addressing the challenges in the current healthcare landscape and ensuring patients receive quality care.

A state audit revealed that the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) failed to collect audited financial statements from several hospitals, including Heywood Hospital and Athol Memorial Hospital, for the period of July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2023. According to Heywood Healthcare's President and CEO, Rozanna Penney, the hospitals were unable to provide these statements due to issues with an electronic medical record (EMR) system that was implemented in February 2021. The EMR system was integrated with the system's revenue cycle, which compromised the overall financial performance and records. Heywood Healthcare stated that this EMR transition was one of several factors contributing to their filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on October 1, 2023. Despite the lack of audited financials, Heywood Healthcare provided unaudited internal financial reports and other operational data to state officials and regulatory agencies and maintained transparency throughout the bankruptcy process, successfully exiting Chapter 11 on September 30, 2024.

An audit by the state watchdog agency, the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA), also noted Heywood Healthcare's inability to provide audited financial statements due to errors related to the EMR transition, further highlighting the negative impact of the technology implementation on the hospital's financial reporting and stability.
