Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Hendrick Health is offering a free Asthma Summer Day Camp from July 28 to July 30 for children ages 7 to 12 diagnosed with moderate to severe asthma. The camp aims to help children learn effective management skills for their condition. The daily sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Johnson Building at Hardin-Simmons University. The camp is designed to provide children with the skills and confidence to manage their asthma through engaging activities, including martial arts, swimming, and arts and crafts. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, asthma is the leading chronic disease in children. There are approximately 500,000 children in Texas who have asthma, a lung condition that makes breathing difficult and can lead to severe attacks requiring urgent care or hospitalization. While there is no cure for asthma, it can be managed with medications and other strategies. The camp is free due to donations from ACE Hardware, but space is limited. Interested participants must complete a registration packet, which includes an application and medical release. The registration deadline is June 27. The health system's hospitals in Abilene have received multiple American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines and Mission: Lifeline achievement awards for their commitment to following research-based guidelines for stroke treatment. Hendrick Health offers advanced stroke treatment options, including tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to dissolve clots and mechanical thrombectomy to remove clots. Follow-up care and rehabilitation services are also available to help patients regain independence.
