SBH Health System is planning a significant expansion of its inpatient psychiatric beds, proposing to nearly double the current capacity as part of a statewide initiative aimed at restoring behavioral health services. The health system, which includes the 422-bed St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, recently submitted plans to the Department of Health to add 23 inpatient psychiatric beds, increasing their total from 49 to 72. This $27 million project is primarily funded by a state capital grant and aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul's efforts to boost mental health capacity in hospitals across New York, following a decline over the past two decades. As part of this expansion, SBH Health System intends to convert 12 beds currently used for substance use disorders into mental health beds and establish 11 new beds, resulting in three 24-bed inpatient psychiatric units upon completion. This development also follows a substantial $142 million state grant announced in February for SBH Health System to revamp its emergency department and enhance primary care and emergency services.
