A plaintiff has voluntarily dismissed a class action lawsuit filed against St. Joseph's/Candler Health System. The lawsuit was related to an alleged six-month-long data breach that the health system reportedly uncovered on June 17, 2021. The plaintiff had claimed that St. Joseph's/Candler failed to protect patients' personal and private information during the breach and did not immediately disclose the incident. The original lawsuit contended that the "suspicious activity" detected on June 17, 2021, was the culmination of the hackers' attack, holding the IT system hostage for ransom. St. Joseph's/Candler had previously stated that it notified patients of the alleged breach on its website, was conducting an investigation, working with law enforcement, and taking steps to secure its systems. The lawsuit alleged that the data breach may have exposed the information of 1.4 million patients.

Vivian Lanier Geiger, mother of Herald Gazette publisher Walter Geiger, passed away at Candler St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah on May 31, 2025, at the age of 92. Funeral services are scheduled to be held on Monday, June 9, at 11 a.m. graveside in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. Gamble Funeral Service of Savannah is in charge of the arrangements. A full obituary is expected to follow.

Bruce M. Jones, PharmD, BCPS, an infectious diseases clinical pharmacy specialist at St. Joseph's/Candler Health System, was featured in an article published on May 31st, 2025, and updated on June 3rd, 2025, on Contagion Live.
