During a recent Regional Child Health Summit, Cook Children's Health Care System presented analytics related to unintentional injuries among children in their service area. According to Cook Children's analytics, from 2021 to 2023, the health system treated 23 patients for firearm-related injuries and 44 for injuries from other gun types (such as BB guns or airsoft guns). The data also revealed that approximately one in five children in their service area live in a home where a gun is not always safely stored. Furthermore, analytics from 2021 to 2023 showed that Cook Children's Medical Centers in Fort Worth and Prosper treated 224 drowning-related injuries. The summit also highlighted the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) based on survey data, indicating that about 18% of children in the service area had two or more ACEs, with difficulty covering basic needs and caregiver divorce being the most common. Cook Children's analytics are clearly being utilized to understand significant child health issues and inform community health efforts. [9]

Cook Children's Center for Community Health was scheduled to host the second session of their Regional Child Health Summits on June 3, 2025. The summit, starting at 9 a.m. CST, aimed to provide updates on data specifically related to the oral health, mental health, injury prevention, and caregiver support of children within their eight-county service area, which includes Collin, Denton, Grayson, Hood, Johnson, Parker, Tarrant, and Wise counties. This session was a continuation of focusing on priorities identified in their first formal assessment and strengthening efforts in areas like asthma, caregiver support, healthy lifestyles, injury prevention, mental health, and oral health. The data presented is derived from Cook Children's comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), which is conducted every three years to understand the evolving health needs of children aged 0-17 in their service area. The summit was also expected to highlight the prevalence and impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and examine the importance of oral health as a critical part of a child's overall well-being, emphasizing education and awareness.
