Cincinnati-based UC Health is undergoing a strategic transition by moving away from providing long-term post-acute inpatient and skilled nursing care. This involves the planned closure of its Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care by September 30 and the intended sale of its adjacent assisted living community, Bridgeway Pointe. According to a news release from UC Health, the decision was influenced by sustained financial challenges related to the age and services of the Daniel Drake Center. This shift in focus will allow the academic health system to invest more significantly in high-demand services and enhance access to primary and specialty care. The transition will impact over 400 employees, who will have opportunities to apply for other positions within UC Health. Current patients at the Daniel Drake Center will either complete their treatment there or be moved to other UC Health facilities or community partners. Outpatient therapy services and physician clinics will be relocated, while the primary care practice on the campus will remain operational. [4]

Dr. Dylan Steen, a cardiologist and adjunct associate professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, has launched a startup called High Enroll, which offers a technology-driven platform aimed at improving recruitment for clinical trials. The platform provides a streamlined solution to the long-standing challenge of connecting research sites, healthcare providers, patients, and the public with available clinical trials. High Enroll is designed to increase the visibility of trials and make participation more accessible. The platform is currently in use at the University of Cincinnati, UC Health, and across 24 states, including at major medical institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Massachusetts General Hospital. The University of Cincinnati and UC Health are addressing healthcare workforce challenges, including burnout and shortages, through a program that places students in clinical settings. [15] The Healthcare Exploration in Patient Care program, recently featured in Becker's Hospital Review, allows students to work as UC Health patient care assistants, providing significant hours of hands-on care and helping to shape the future healthcare workforce. [15] Dr. Arthur Pancioli, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at UC Health and a co-creator of the course, highlighted how the program strengthens the workforce, improves patient outcomes, and is expanding into various clinical specialties such as radiology, laboratory, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, pharmacy, and research.
