Powers Health recently honored cancer warriors with a celebration for National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 1. The event, held in the garden outside Powers Health Rehabilitation Center, included laughter, music, and inspiring stories of perseverance. Survivors, caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals from across Northwest Indiana attended the event, which featured a grilled lunch and a DJ. This was the fourth year for the event, and speakers from Powers Health and Northwest Cancer Centers reflected on advancements in cancer care and the significance of honoring survivorship. Craig Bolda, administrator of Powers Health Rehabilitation Center, spoke about the Valori Kolarczyk Healing Garden, a peaceful space for recovery named in memory of a former program director. Leo Correa, CEO of St. Catherine Hospital and executive leader of Cancer Care Services for Powers Health, shared plans for a new 71,000-square-foot Cancer Care Center set to open later this year. This new facility, a collaboration between Powers Health and Northwest Cancer Centers, will centralize advanced diagnostic testing, radiation therapy, infusion services, cancer-focused physical therapy, and access to clinical trials and counseling. Dr. Mohamad Kassar, president of Northwest Cancer Centers, emphasized the collaborative effort required to fight cancer. The event also featured an emotional account from cancer survivor Daniel Litwicki, who shared his eight-year journey and expressed gratitude to his care team and family.

Powers Health has announced a strategic partnership with Profound Research to establish a clinical research center in Northwest Indiana. This collaboration aims to integrate clinical research operations within select Powers Health locations, initially concentrating on cardiology, gastroenterology, and neurology. This model is designed to facilitate patient participation in clinical research through their existing physicians, thereby reducing barriers and increasing access to advanced care options within the community. Through this partnership, Powers Health will leverage Profound Research's expertise in trial activation, patient recruitment, and regulatory compliance to introduce new treatment opportunities to the area. Dr. Alan Kumar, chief operating officer of Powers Health, stated that this initiative underscores their dedication to advancing patient care. Profound Research, an integrated clinical research site network, focuses on combining scalable operations with a patient-centered approach. The partnership aligns with both organizations' shared objective of improving lives by broadening access to advanced treatments. The initial studies at Powers Health are anticipated to begin enrolling patients in the summer, with plans to expand into additional specialties and locations in the coming months.

Powers Health highlighted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) granting of de novo authorization for CLAIRITY BREAST, an AI-powered, image-based platform designed to help predict a woman's five-year risk for developing breast cancer. This platform analyzes subtle imaging features on routine mammograms to provide an early risk prediction score to healthcare providers through their existing clinical systems. According to a statement from the CEO of Clairity, Jeff Luber, this technology represents a significant advancement as it predicts the risk of future cancer from patterns in otherwise normal screenings before a mass is even present and is designed to integrate seamlessly into current clinical workflows. The AI model has been trained on millions of images and validated on a dataset of over 77,000 mammograms from diverse screening centers.

Community Hospital, part of Powers Health, recently received accreditation as a Level 3 Epilepsy Center from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). This accreditation signifies that Community Hospital possesses the professional expertise and facilities necessary to provide the highest level of medical evaluation and treatment for patients dealing with complex epilepsy. According to the NAEC, Level 3 centers offer a comprehensive, team-based approach to diagnosing and treating epilepsy, involving specialists such as epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, and nurse specialists. Community Hospital is one of only three hospitals in Indiana and the sole hospital in Northwest Indiana to achieve this Level 3 accreditation. [17]

Community Hospital in Munster, an affiliate of Powers Health, has received The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery. This certification, earned in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, indicates that Community Hospital meets rigorous standards for spine surgery care. The evaluation process included an on-site review of clinical information management, program management, and clinical care, examining all steps of the patient care journey from consultations through rehabilitation and follow-up. Community Hospital had previously earned this certification in 2015.

President and CEO, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc.

Donald P. Fesko is the President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc., the parent company of Powers Health. He is a doctor of optometry and holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Purdue University and a Masters in Business Administration from Indiana University Northwest. He was named a Modern Healthcare Up & Comer in 2008, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) in 2009, and received the ACHE's Robert S. Hudgens Award honoring the Young Healthcare Executive of the Year in 2012. Fesko has also served as Chairman of the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority and is active on numerous boards, including the Indiana Hospital Association Board of Directors and the Community Cancer Research Foundation Board.
