Jo Bonner is the fourth president of the University of South Alabama. He has a background in both politics and higher education administration. Bonner served as the U.S. Representative for Alabama's 1st congressional district for over a decade, from 2003 to 2013. Following his congressional service, he was the vice chancellor for economic development for The University of Alabama System from 2013 to 2018. Before becoming president of USA, he also served as chief of staff to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey from 2019 to 2021. Bonner is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in journalism and began his career working for Congressman Sonny Callahan. He assumed the presidency of the University of South Alabama in December 2021.
Dr. John V. Marymont, M.D., M.B.A., is the Dean of the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of South Alabama (USA) Health. He is an accomplished academic health system executive leader, medical school dean, professor, and orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience leading academic medical centers, medical schools, and physician enterprises. Dr. Marymont graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University and earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston, a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, and a foot and ankle fellowship at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. He also holds a medical and healthcare management certificate and a Master of Business Administration from the Jones School of Business at Rice University, where he was recognized as a Jones Scholar. Before joining USA Health in 2016, Dr. Marymont had a 15-year career with Baylor College of Medicine and later moved to the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Shreveport. At LSU, he served on senior leadership teams, was chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and served as interim dean of the College of Medicine, where he played a role in the privatization of the state-run hospital system. At USA Health, Dr. Marymont oversees the Whiddon College of Medicine, University Hospital, Children's & Women's Hospital, Providence Hospital, the Mitchell Cancer Institute, the physician enterprise, and the USA Healthcare Authority. He has led significant initiatives to transform USA Health, including restructuring the health system, developing the USA Healthcare Authority, expanding the clinical enterprise, and leading the acquisition of Providence Hospital. He has also been involved in the development of a new education and research facility for the Whiddon College of Medicine.
Owen Bailey, M.S.H.A., FACHE, is the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs at USA Health. He is a nationally recognized healthcare leader with almost 38 years in healthcare administration. He earned a bachelor's degree in health administration from Auburn University and a master's degree in health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Prior to his current role, Bailey served as the administrator of USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital for five years, where he oversaw the construction of a new children's tower. Before joining USA Health, he was the president and chief executive officer of Thomas Hospital in Fairhope from 1992 to 2006 and an executive vice president at Infirmary Health System from 2006 to 2011. Bailey became the chief operating officer of USA Health in March 2016 and was named chief executive officer and senior associate vice president for medical affairs in March 2017. During his tenure as CEO, USA Health has grown significantly, expanding its facilities and services. He played a key role in the acquisition of Ascension Providence, which made USA Health the largest public health system in the region. Bailey is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and has held numerous board positions in healthcare and community organizations. He is set to retire on August 1, 2025.
Natalie Fox, DNP, PNP-BC, serves as the Interim CEO and Chief Physician Enterprise Officer at USA Health, the academic health system of the University of South Alabama. In this role, she is responsible for the overall strategy, performance, and operations of the physician enterprise, which includes over 400 physicians, 300 advanced practice providers, and more than 300 residents and fellows. Dr. Fox has been a dedicated leader at USA Health since 2011, holding several key positions. Prior to her current role, she was the assistant administrator and chief nursing officer for USA Health Physicians Group, where she led initiatives to improve population health and patient access. She also served as the executive director of academic physician practices and manager of clinical operations for pediatrics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fox directed USA Health's testing and vaccination efforts in partnership with the City of Mobile, receiving the Mobile Community Health Leadership Award and an Exceptional Citizenship Award from Mayor Sandy Stimpson for her work. A three-time graduate of the University of South Alabama, Dr. Fox holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice, a Master of Nursing in Pediatrics, and a Bachelor of Nursing. Dr. Fox has received numerous accolades, including Alabama's Top Nurses Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing her impact on the nursing profession. She has also been named to Becker's Hospital Review's "Rising Stars Under 40" list and recognized in Mobile Bay Magazine's "40 Under 40" class. In 2023, she was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the state's Certificate of Need Review Board. She also previously served as one of the initial LGBTQ+ liaisons for the City of Mobile.
Dr. Michael Chang is the Chief Medical Officer & Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs at USA Health, joining in 2018. He is also a Professor of Surgery at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Before his tenure at USA Health, Dr. Chang spent 24 years at Wake Forest Baptist Health, where he served as chief medical officer for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and chief quality officer for the health system. His roles at Wake Forest also included professor of surgery and executive director of the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery Service Line. Dr. Chang earned his bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University, his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completed his general surgery residency at UAB, and a fellowship in critical care and trauma surgery at Vanderbilt. He is a national expert in quality assessment and performance improvement and has held significant leadership positions with the American College of Surgeons. At USA Health, he leads initiatives in clinical quality, safety, and access, and was recognized in Becker's Hospital Review's 2025 list of Chief Medical Officers to Know.
Shannon Scaturro, M.S.H.A., M.S.N., CRNA, FACHE, is the Chief Operating Officer and Assistant Vice President for Medical Affairs at USA Health. He works with USA Health CEO Owen Bailey to plan and develop strategic initiatives and operational performance. His responsibilities include oversight of all acute-care facilities, the Freestanding Emergency Department and Imaging Center in Mobile, the upcoming Baldwin County Ambulatory Surgery Center, and rural sites of care, as well as assisting in developing physician strategy. Scaturro has over 25 years of experience in healthcare, with much of it in leadership roles. Before becoming COO, he served as the administrator of USA Health University Hospital and assistant vice president for medical affairs, starting in January 2022. Prior to joining USA Health, he was the vice president of operations at Ascension St. Vincent's Birmingham for more than five years. He also held the position of vice president of operations and surgical services at Ascension Providence in Mobile. Additionally, he was a practicing certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) in the Mobile area and founded United Anesthesia Resources. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama, a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in nurse anesthesia from the University of Tennessee, and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds several board and council positions, including with the Alabama Hospital Association, the Statewide Trauma and Health System Advisory Council, and the USA Health Baldwin County Ambulatory Surgery Center.
Deborah Browning, MSN, RN, CENP, is the chief executive officer at USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital. With over 25 years of experience in healthcare, specializing in pediatrics and women's health, she joined USA Health in March 2021 as chief nursing officer and later served as interim administrator before being named CEO in October 2023. Her prior roles include serving as chief nursing officer at Oklahoma Children's Hospital and holding responsibilities for women's and children's service lines at institutions such as Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Browning holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Spalding University and a Master's in Nursing Administration from the University of Phoenix. She is a certified nurse executive, a fellow of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, has completed the AONE Nursing Director Fellowship, and participates in national AONL committees.
Michelle Dudley is the Executive Director, HCA Practice Management at USA Health. In this role, she is responsible for the operational and financial management of the physicians and advanced-care providers within the USA Healthcare Authority. She also collaborates closely with the vice president of medical affairs on special projects and manages the flow of funds between the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama and USA Health. Dudley joined USA Health in October 2017 and has over 30 years of experience in healthcare. Prior to her position at USA Health, she served as vice president of finance for the Ascension Gulf Coast Medical Group, where she oversaw more than 450 physician providers and advanced practitioners. Dudley holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in public administration from the University of South Alabama. She is also a Certified Public Accountant and has participated in various leadership development programs, possessing a strong inclination for a servant-leader management style.
Kerry Flowers serves as the Chief Culture and Experience Officer and Interim Chief Human Resource Officer at USA Health. He has over 30 years of experience in healthcare and a passion for helping professionals reach their full potential. Flowers joined USA Health in 2020 as the Director of Organizational Development and was promoted to Chief Culture and Experience Officer in late 2024. His work at USA Health focuses on enhancing patient and employee engagement, leadership development, and improving workplace culture through data-driven strategies. Prior to his time at USA Health, he owned a consulting firm from 2013-2020, specializing in executive coaching, leadership development, and employee engagement in various healthcare systems in Alabama. An Alabama native, he began his healthcare career with a desire to help people and recognized the significance of a positive environment for performance.
Marie Katz is the executive director for the Office of Marketing and Communications at USA Health. She joined USA Health in 2019 as creative services director and became interim associate vice president in September 2022. Before her time at USA Health, Katz was the assistant director of creative services for the Office of Marketing and Communications at the University of South Alabama. For over a decade, she owned a national wholesale business called The Paper Menu. Earlier in her career, she worked as an art director for Business Alabama at PMT Publishing and at Sullivan-St. Clair Advertising. Katz is a graduate of the University of Alabama and has received numerous regional and national awards for her work. Her work has also been featured in notable magazines such as Oprah Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and Town & Country Magazine.
Danny Rickert is the Chief Policy Officer and Assistant Vice President for Medical Affairs at USA Health. In this role, he is responsible for managed-care initiatives, telehealth, provider outreach, regulatory affairs, and government relations. He also serves as CEO of Gulf Coast TotalCare, a USA Health-owned care management organization. Rickert has over 30 years of healthcare experience, with more than 21 years at USA Health in various positions, including director of marketing and business development, practice director for the department of obstetrics and gynecology, and associate administrator. Before joining USA Health, he spent 13 years at PrimeHealth, a managed care organization affiliated with USA Health, where he was director of operations and marketing director. His accomplishments at PrimeHealth included developing new products, negotiating a joint venture, and helping establish the first Medicaid managed care plan in Alabama. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Marketing from the University of South Alabama. Rickert was appointed to the Statewide Health Coordinating Council (SHCC) by Governor Kay Ivey for a second term through May 2025, representing providers. He has served on the council since 2019.
