Healthcare Systems of America (HSA), an affiliate of Glendale, California-based American Healthcare Systems, has received permanent approval to operate five hospitals in South Florida. This agreement, approved by U.S. Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston bankruptcy court, transitions HSA from interim manager to the permanent operator of Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, Coral Gables Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, North Shore Medical Center in North Miami-Dade, and Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes. The sale agreement between the previous owner, Steward Health Care, Medical Properties Trust (the landlord), and HSA was expected to be finalized by the end of October 2024. Court documents indicate that HSA has signed lease agreements with Medical Properties Trust and plans to offer employment to substantially all of Steward's eligible employees at these facilities, honoring seniority and maintaining unionized workers' salaries and wages for at least a year. HSA is also responsible for other hospital obligations, including patient care, provider agreements with Medicare, and paying owed property taxes. [7]

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, Christopher Lopez, approved the sale of seven hospitals belonging to the now-bankrupt Steward Health Care to Healthcare Systems of America (HSA), an affiliate of Glendale, Calif.-based American Healthcare Systems. This approval, granted during a court hearing on October 25, follows HSA's role as the interim manager for these hospitals since September 11. The seven hospitals involved in the sale include St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston, Texas; Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, Texas; Coral Gables Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes, and Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, all in Florida; and North Shore Medical Center in Miami, Florida. Steward Health Care had filed for Chapter 11 protection on May 6 and has been in the process of selling its 31 hospitals. HSA has also been the interim manager for Steward's Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe, Louisiana since September 11. [11, 12]

The report alleges that HSA appears to be a shell entity created and funded by Medical Properties Trust (MPT) to operate bankrupt Steward hospitals. It also claims that American Healthcare Systems, sharing a CEO (Michael Sarian) with HSA, has a negative track record, citing issues at a previous hospital it operated where trauma center status was allegedly revoked and funds were supposedly used to support other struggling operations. The report questions the suitability of these entities as replacement operators for the Steward facilities.
