Dr. Joseph MacDonald oversees clinical activities and resources to ensure the efficient delivery of health services aimed at achieving high-quality patient outcomes. [3] He is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and is a fellow in both the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the Society of Hospital Medicine. [3] Prior to joining Lancaster Medical Center, MacDonald served as chair of the Department of Medicine at UPMC Harrisburg, UPMC West Shore and UPMC Community Osteopathic. [3] He also previously served as vice president of the medical staff at UPMC Lititz and was network medical co-director, hospitalist service, for UPMC in Central Pennsylvania. [12] MacDonald served as a U.S. Army major and physician on active duty, including a combat deployment to Iraq. [4, 12] He earned his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Einstein Medical Center. He also holds an MBA from Saint Joseph's University. Angela Sonon, DNP, CRNP, oversees the day-to-day operations of the hospital, working with departments and managers to ensure the hospital is operating efficiently and effectively. [3] She first joined the hospital in 2022 as its senior director of quality and medical affairs. [3] Before joining Penn State Health, Sonon worked at Reading Hospital/Tower Health for 29 years in various capacities, most recently as its senior director of the McGlinn Cancer Center. [3]
Joseph Frank provides executive-level leadership for Penn State Health's East Region, which includes Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center, driving operations, growth and coordination across each region. [3, 6] He also focuses on developing and maintaining strong relationships with local referring physicians in private practice. [3]
Valerie Ritter, MSN, RN, CEN, was named interim chief nursing officer for Lancaster Medical Center in February 2025. [3] In this role, she oversees all nursing activities and clinical operations to ensure exceptional patient care.
