He has an extensive background in healthcare administration, including serving as Interim Administrator for Logan Health in Chester, Montana (a Critical Access Hospital) and as CEO for two Avera Critical Access Hospitals in Nebraska for 6 years. He holds a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education with an Economics Emphasis from the University of Nebraska. He has experience in implementing electronic medical record systems, completing state surveys, recruiting medical staff, and developing programs. He is also described as an avid outdoorsman.
