Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) administrators are exploring a plan to construct a new medical office building, estimated to cost between $35 million and $50 million. The purpose of this project is to consolidate outpatient services, which are currently spread across seven leased locations throughout the valley, into a single facility. The proposed building, potentially up to 50,000 square feet, would be situated on a 4.2-acre parcel of undeveloped land owned by GVH, located just north of the new EMS building on North Colorado Street in Gunnison. If approved, construction could be completed as early as 2027. GVH CEO Jason Amrich provided an update on the project during a work session with Gunnison County Commissioners. A consulting firm, Stroudwater Associates, is finalizing a financial impact assessment that will present various financing options. This assessment will help administrators decide whether to seek approval from the GVH board of trustees in July. Amrich noted that consolidating services would allow GVH to evaluate its overall facilities and potentially divest from some properties. The plan aligns with a previous GVH facility master plan that recommended consolidating outlying clinics. Potential funding sources include utilizing GVH's debt capacity, a USDA loan program for rural hospital development, tapping into GVH reserves, or partnering with a third-party developer. The new building could also offer space for private healthcare providers and potentially lab space for the Western Colorado University nursing program. Amrich also expressed concern that older, potentially substandard buildings could negatively impact public perception of the quality of care at GVH. According to a University of Colorado Boulder study, independent hospitals significantly contribute to Colorado's economy; GVH currently employs 550 people and had salaries and benefits exceeding $55 million in 2024.

Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) administrators are currently exploring plans to construct a new medical office building, a project estimated to cost between $35 and $50 million. This proposed development aims to consolidate outpatient services, which are currently spread across seven leased locations, into a single facility. The favored site for this potential 50,000-square-foot building is a 4.2-acre parcel of undeveloped land already owned by GVH, situated just north of the new EMS building on North Colorado Street in Gunnison. If the project receives approval, construction could potentially be completed as early as 2027. GVH CEO Jason Amrich recently provided an update on the project's status during a work session with Gunnison County Commissioners. A consulting firm, Stroudwater Associates, is finalizing a financial impact assessment that will outline various financing options. This assessment will help administrators decide whether to seek approval from the GVH board of trustees in July. Consolidating clinics into a central office building was a recommendation from a GVH facility master plan developed last year by Stroudwater, which indicated that the health system had too many dispersed locations. Amrich also noted that while GVH has the debt capacity for financing, other options like a USDA loan program for rural hospital development, utilizing GVH reserves, or partnering with a third-party developer are also being considered. Amrich emphasized that potentially substandard current buildings can negatively impact public perception of care quality and highlighted the hospital's significant contribution to the local economy, currently employing 550 people and paying over $55 million in salaries and benefits in 2024.
