East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC), part of East Alabama Health, is one of the first hospitals in Alabama to acquire the new da Vinci 5 surgical system. This represents a new generation of robotic technology aimed at improving precision and control during minimally invasive procedures. The first surgery using this advanced equipment was conducted on June 16, 2025. According to Laura Grill, president and CEO of East Alabama Health, this investment reinforces their commitment to providing surgeons with the necessary tools for world-class care. The da Vinci 5 platform features 150 design innovations and significantly more computing power than its predecessor. A key technological advancement is the inclusion of force feedback sensors, which measure forces at the instrument tips in real-time for enhanced accuracy. Robotic procedures allow for smaller incisions, potentially leading to reduced scarring, faster recovery, and less pain for patients. Dr. Njideka Obiekwe, medical director for EAMC's robotics program, highlighted that the new system offers faster, more precise, and more advanced capabilities, improving surgical structure and efficiency, allowing for real-time intraoperative consultations, and creating training opportunities for future medical professionals. EAMC is the third hospital in the state to acquire this technology. The hospital has a history of pioneering robotic care in general, gynecologic, and urologic procedures, with several surgeons having completed over 1,000 robotic-assisted procedures. EAMC received accreditation as a Robotic Surgery Center of Excellence in 2023, recognizing its dedication to high-quality, safe patient care.
