Heritage Valley Health System is scheduled to close its Heritage Valley Kennedy Hospital campus on June 30, 2025. This decision was announced in April 2025 and is attributed to significant financial losses experienced by the facility. The closure impacts several key services at the Kennedy location, including the emergency room, inpatient behavioral health, outpatient surgery, specialty diagnostic services, and pulmonary rehabilitation units. While the hospital is closing, some outpatient services, such as a walk-in clinic, blood draw center, outpatient physical rehabilitation care, and physician offices, are expected to continue operating in the adjacent medical office building. Heritage Valley stated that staff working at the Kennedy campus will be offered other positions within the health system or severance packages. The health system cited declining patient volume and challenges with reimbursement rates from commercial insurers as primary reasons for the closure. Efforts were reportedly made by community members and local leaders, including an online petition, to prevent the hospital's closure, highlighting its importance to the surrounding area. Services are being transitioned to Heritage Valley's other hospitals, with Heritage Valley Sewickley being the closest alternative for many affected patients. [13, 20]

These awards celebrated employees with years of service ranging from 5 to an impressive 50 years, with more than 90 individuals having served the health system for over 25 years. The recognition is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the staff in providing patient care. As part of the celebration and to show appreciation for their employees, Heritage Valley planned various activities throughout the month, including giveaways and food trucks, culminating in a system-wide service recognition event. The E-Connections newsletter highlighted some employees with significant tenures, sharing their positive experiences and contributions to the health system over the years. Norman Mitry, President and CEO of Heritage Valley Health System, confirmed that Heritage Valley Sewickley hospital will remain open and is not expected to be negatively impacted by the upcoming closure of the former Ohio Valley Hospital in Kennedy Township at the end of June 2025. Following the closure, Heritage Valley Sewickley will be one of only two hospitals within the system network. Mitry framed the Kennedy closure as a strategic consolidation necessary due to declining patient activity and insufficient insurance reimbursements, rather than an indicator of broader issues for the system. Usage at the Sewickley facility has reportedly increased since 2023 when services at the Kennedy hospital were reduced. The closure of the Kennedy hospital is anticipated to potentially boost activity at Heritage Valley Sewickley, which is located only eight miles away. Heritage Valley had been projected to experience a $30 million operating loss in Fiscal Year 2024, following four years of operating in the red, and its credit ratings have weakened in recent years.
