SUN Behavioral Health, headquartered in Red Bank, New Jersey, has acquired the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) assets of Seaside Healthcare. This move is part of SUN Behavioral Health's strategy to integrate various services to support individuals with complex behavioral health needs through longer-term recovery, aiming to improve outcomes and reduce readmissions. While Seaside Healthcare's assets are located in multiple states, including Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, the only existing footprint overlap with SUN Behavioral Health is in Houston, Texas, where SUN operates a 148-bed psychiatric hospital. SUN Behavioral Health is already piloting an integration of their acute facility care and HCBS services in Houston. This acquisition allows SUN to potentially expand by backfilling Seaside Healthcare's HCBS markets with new SUN hospitals or acquiring facilities in more developed markets, reinforcing a popular clinical and investment thesis in the behavioral health sector. Shreveport, Louisiana-based Seaside Healthcare sold its two major behavioral health divisions, with SUN Behavioral Health purchasing the outpatient therapy business.

SUN Behavioral Health, which operates facilities in multiple states including Texas, has strategically partnered with WellSky to enhance its operational efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance. Previously relying on paper records, which limited accessibility and real-time updates, SUN Behavioral Health initially implemented WellSky Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) and subsequently adopted WellSky Specialty Care for Behavioral Health as their integrated electronic health record (EHR) system. They utilize a total of four WellSky solutions and services, including WellSky Communication Hub and WellSky Data Access. According to Tonya St. Clair, Senior VP, Clinical Services and Development at SUN, a key advantage of this partnership is WellSky's ability to understand their specific behavioral health and regulatory needs and help integrate solutions into their record system. The implementation of WellSky has led to significant benefits, such as streamlining operations, improving compliance, and providing easily accessible and up-to-date patient data, which assists in assessing social determinants of health and anticipating patient needs at discharge. The integration of RCM and EHR has also automated charge generation, reducing manual tracking and improving financial accuracy and efficiency. Sun Behavioral Health Houston has partnered with the Gulf Coast Center since October 2023 to address the lack of psychiatric inpatient beds in Brazoria County. Sun Behavioral Health Houston, which has a 148-bed psychiatric hospital, has reserved 18 beds specifically for patients from the Gulf Coast region who do not have health insurance. According to Mikki Kalina, director of business development at SUN Behavioral Health Houston, approximately 500 patients from the Gulf Coast Region were admitted between April and November, although not all used the reserved beds as some had insurance. This partnership highlights SUN Behavioral Health Houston's involvement in community relations by providing crucial inpatient care access to uninsured individuals in a neighboring county facing a shortage of mental health resources.

A lawsuit was filed against Sun Houston, LLC, operating as Sun Behavioral Houston, and Dr. Bachir Debba in the District Court of Harris County, Texas, on October 24, 2024. The plaintiff, Sabrina Nicholson, alleges medical negligence resulting in severe injuries. According to the complaint, Nicholson was admitted for post-partum psychosis with suicidal ideations on October 27, 2022, and was allegedly left unsupervised, leading her to fall from a second-story window. The lawsuit claims the defendants failed to provide adequate staffing, proper training, sufficient monitoring, and appropriate emergency response. Nicholson is seeking over $1 million in damages for physical pain, mental anguish, disfigurement, loss of earnings, and medical expenses, and also requests exemplary damages.

Eloisa Lerma and Ernesto Dominguez filed a medical negligence lawsuit against Sun Behavioral Houston, also known as Sun Houston, LLC, and several healthcare professionals in Harris County District Court on September 30, 2024. The lawsuit stems from the death of Roccio Dominguez. The plaintiffs allege that inadequate medical care at the facility led to severe injuries and his subsequent death. The complaint states that Roccio was admitted on September 27, 2022, and despite experiencing severe stomach pain, did not receive adequate medical intervention before his condition worsened and he passed away after being transferred to another hospital. The plaintiffs accuse the defendants of multiple breaches in their duty of care, including the failure to properly evaluate and treat Roccio's condition. They are seeking damages exceeding $1 million for survival claims related to Roccio's pain and suffering and wrongful death claims for the family's loss and anguish. Punitive damages are also sought based on allegations of gross negligence. The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys Jeff Musslewhite and Lori L. Brown and have requested a jury trial.
