UT Southwestern has withdrawn as a partner for the new Dallas State Psychiatric Hospital. Children's Health is also involved in this project, specifically with a dedicated 92-bed pediatric wing. Children's Health has stated that it remains committed to expanding behavioral health services for the pediatric population in North Texas and increasing access to critical mental and behavioral healthcare for children and families. They look forward to continued collaboration with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). The new hospital, located across the street from Children's Health's Dallas campus, was designed for 292 beds in total. The state approved $282.5 million for the construction and design, and Children's Health added $200 million for the pediatric wing. HHSC will operate the hospital, now called Dallas State Hospital, without UTSW physicians staffing it, though the facility is expected to begin seeing patients by the end of the year. [8]

UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Health jointly announced receiving a historic nine-figure grant from the Moody Foundation. This significant donation is designated to support the new $5 billion pediatric campus currently under construction in Dallas. The new hospital is intended to address the growing demand for pediatric healthcare services, research, and training in the region. The grant from the Moody Foundation is the largest single gift received for this landmark project to date. In recognition of the foundation's substantial contribution, the hospital at the new Dallas pediatric campus will be named Moody Children's Hospital upon its anticipated completion in 2031. An op-ed in the Dallas Morning News, discussed in a D Magazine article, highlighted the potential negative impact on Texas children and families due to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission's (HHSC) decision to deny renewed Medicaid STAR and CHIP contracts to Cook Children's Health Plan and other nonprofit community health plans. The state instead chose to award these contracts, part of a $116 billion proposal, to national for-profit health care companies, many not based in Texas. [6, 9] This decision could force 1.8 million children and pregnant women to switch from their current health plans to unfamiliar corporate insurers. Cook Children's argues this decision is flawed and resulted from a subjective contract-renewal process that did not adequately consider past performance and quality. The health plan is working with state legislators on bills that would reinstate the children's hospital plans and modify the contract award process in the future to protect local healthcare management for vulnerable children.
