Researchers at Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) have received a two-year grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to study disparities in doctor-patient relationships. [21] This research will utilize a previously developed and validated scale to measure patients' experiences of compassion from doctors during clinic visits, specifically testing for disparities based on patient race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. [21] The grant application was awarded a perfect impact score of 10 by the AHRQ's scientific review group, placing it in the top 1% of all research grant applications received. [21] Dr. Stephen Trzeciak, Chief of Medicine at Cooper and Professor and Chair of Medicine at CMSRU, is the principal investigator, with Dr. Brian W. Roberts, a physician scientist in emergency medicine, serving as study director. [21] The study hypothesizes that patients in populations experiencing health disparities may experience less compassion from clinicians, which could be associated with lower trust in the healthcare system and a higher risk of being lost to follow-up. [21] The research plans to enroll 350 adult patients from urban, suburban, and rural practices to ensure a broad range of participants. [21]

Cooper University Health Care disclosed a data breach on May 23, 2025, which potentially impacted the sensitive information of 57,412 individuals. The health system first detected unusual network activity in May 2024, leading to an investigation that concluded on March 26, 2025. The compromised data, depending on the individual, may include names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, health insurance details, treatment information, medical record numbers, and medical history. Cooper stated it is not aware of any misuse of the information but has offered credit monitoring services and reported the incident to the FBI. Following the disclosure, at least two class-action lawsuits have been filed against Cooper University Health Care in connection with the breach.
