Elizabeth Hertel serves as Director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). A seasoned public health leader, Hertel brings extensive experience in policy development, program administration, and community engagement to this role, overseeing nearly 16,000 employees across Michigan. [9] She has been deeply committed to keeping kids safe from abuse and neglect and increasing access to behavioral health care, driving significant innovation and transformation across both systems. [9] Prior to being appointed Director in 2021, she served as Senior Chief Deputy Director for Administration, overseeing several key departments within MDHHS. [9] Her career in public service spans two decades. [9] Hertel joined the Michigan Department of Community Health in 2013 as Senior Assistant for Policy and Planning prior to its merger with the Department of Human Services forming MDHHS in 2015. [9] Prior to her government roles, Hertel was Director of Michigan Advocacy for Trinity Health and held various other policy roles in the private sector and legislature. Jean Ingersoll is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). In this role, she oversees several key areas, including the Bureau of Emergency Preparedness, EMS, and Systems of Care, the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council, Legal Affairs Administration, Policy Planning and Operational Support Administration, the Office of Child Support, and the Bureau of Children's Coordinated Health Policy and Supports. Ingersoll has worked for the State of Michigan for over two decades, beginning her career at the Michigan Department of Transportation. She joined MDHHS in 2011, initially serving as an assistant administrator to the Chief Deputy Director. She went on to manage programs such as Pathways to Potential and the Community Resource Program and led the Integrated Service Delivery Project. In 2016, she moved to the Department of Technology, Management and Budget as the litigation and FOIA manager and interim Chief of Staff. Following that, she was the Director of Policy and interim Director and Health Officer at the Detroit Health Department. Ingersoll returned to MDHHS in 2019 as the Administrative Deputy Director of Public Health and later served as the department's Deputy Director of Critical Support before assuming her current position. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Michigan State University and a law degree from the MSU College of Law.
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian is the Chief Medical Executive for the State of Michigan, appointed in September 2021. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Bagdasarian earned her medical degree from Wayne State University and completed her internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Michigan. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree in hospital and molecular epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where she serves as adjunct faculty. Prior to her current role, Dr. Bagdasarian served as a Senior Public Health Physician for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, focusing on COVID-19 testing strategies. She has also worked internationally in Singapore and Bangladesh and has consulted for the World Health Organization (WHO) on outbreak preparedness and COVID-19 since early 2020. From 2015 to 2020, she led hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship teams in Singapore. She has held teaching appointments at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and the National University of Singapore and has authored over 40 publications on infectious diseases and public health. In her role as Chief Medical Executive, she is a member of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's Cabinet and chairs several state councils and task forces, including the Public Health Advisory Council, Childhood Lead Elimination Commission, Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, and Opioid Task Force.
Laura Blodgett is the senior deputy director for the Communications Administration at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). In this role, she oversees the Office of Communications, which includes internal and external communications and marketing, as well as the Bureau of Community Engagement and Workforce Transformation. This bureau focuses on engaging employees, improving the workplace, implementing continuous improvement projects, and connecting with community and faith-based stakeholders. Blodgett is an experienced communications leader with over 25 years in the field. Her expertise includes crisis communications, media relations, corporate communications, management, and public relations. Before joining MDHHS, she was the statewide manager of communications for Trinity Health Michigan, where she was involved in legislative and advocacy relations. She has also worked in automotive and agency communications and has been a contributing writer for publications such as Crain's Detroit Business, The Detroit News, and MLive. Blodgett holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Loyola University Chicago.
Chardaé Burton is the Director of Legislative Affairs at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). In this role, she is responsible for overseeing the legislative and constituent services teams and developing the department's legislative priorities at both state and federal levels. Burton's background includes serving as Senior Advisor to the MDHHS Chief Deputy Director for Administration, where she contributed to the development of departmental programs and policies. She has also held positions within MDHHS as an eligibility specialist in Wayne County and as a legislative analyst, working closely with the Executive Office of the Governor, the Michigan Legislature, and stakeholders on health and human services policy. Her work as a legislative analyst included focusing on child welfare policy, behavioral and mental health, and social determinants of health. Prior to her roles as a legislative analyst and Senior Advisor, Burton served as a Success Coach in the Pathways to Potential program, assisting students and families in overcoming barriers. She also completed an internship with the Michigan House of Representatives. Burton is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, human resources, and management. She also holds an associate degree from Washtenaw Community College and previously studied architecture at the University of Detroit Mercy. In 2020, she was a policy fellow at the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation at the University of Michigan.
Mike DeRose is the Director of Human Resources for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). He is responsible for overseeing all HR functions within MDHHS, including labor relations, classifications and selections, specialized hiring and recruitment, and compensation, payroll, and transactions. DeRose has over 18 years of experience in various human resources roles. He joined MDHHS in 2017 as the classifications and selections manager and was promoted to Director of Human Resources in October 2018. Prior to his time at MDHHS, he served as the staffing and compensation manager for the Michigan Department of Transportation. He also held human resources positions with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and the Michigan Civil Service Commission. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and holds a master's degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University.
