A state Supreme Court jury in Watertown awarded an Alexandria Bay man $5.6 million in damages in a malpractice lawsuit against Samaritan Medical Center. The plaintiff, Roger L. Altman, filed the suit in June 2019, alleging that the care he received at Samaritan in June 2018, at the age of 75, was deficient and led to the amputation of his leg. According to Altman's attorneys, despite clear signs of serious illness and dangerously low blood pressure, life-saving intervention was delayed. This delay allegedly resulted in the deterioration of circulation to Altman's leg beyond repair, requiring an above-the-knee amputation. A second procedure was reportedly needed to remove the remaining portion of his leg up to the hip due to infection. The jury found the hospital responsible, even though the doctor primarily administering care was working at Samaritan on a temporary basis. [5]
