Kindred Hospitals, a network of long-term acute care hospitals that is part of ScionHealth (formed from the acquisition of Kindred Healthcare by LifePoint Health), announced job cuts and facility consolidation in the Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida area. This move consolidates three facilities into two to support continued delivery of high-quality, long-term acute care. According to a Kindred spokesperson, this change will enable more robust investment in facilities, create a stronger staffing structure, amplify innovation, and enhance the patient and family experience. Kindred Hospital Bay Area-Tampa is scheduled to close on April 30, 2025, with patients being discharged or transferred to other Kindred locations.

Ventas, Inc., a real estate investment trust, announced new agreements with Kindred Healthcare, LLC and its parent companies, including ScionHealth, concerning the lease of 23 long-term acute care hospitals (LTACs). These agreements, termed the 2024 Kindred Agreements, commenced on May 1, 2025, and set the initial annualized cash contractual base rent for the LTACs at $80 million, with an annual escalation of 2.75% through April 30, 2030. As part of these agreements, Ventas also obtained rights to additional revenue-sharing rent and warrants for 9.9% of ScionHealth's common equity. Kindred committed to paying full contractual cash rent through April 2025. The transactions are intended to improve the facility environment for patient care, reinforce the existing Kindred Master Lease, provide potential upside for Ventas, and enable Kindred to enhance its credit profile. Ventas also acquired the real estate and related property of five performing LTAC assets for $189 million, which will continue to be operated by Kindred under the current master lease for an initial 10-year term with an immediate annual cash rent of $16 million, also escalating annually by 2.75%. Gentiva, the successor to Kindred at Home, agreed to a settlement of $19.428 million to resolve allegations under the False Claims Act. The allegations stated that Kindred at Home and related entities knowingly submitted false claims and improperly kept overpayments for hospice services provided to patients who were not eligible for these benefits under various federal healthcare programs, including Medicare and Medicaid. The settlement covers alleged conduct that occurred from 2010 until February 2020. Additionally, the settlement resolves accusations that certain Kindred, SouthernCare, and SouthernCare New Beacon locations intentionally concealed or avoided obligations to repay these hospice claims. Allegations that SouthernCare New Beacon violated the Anti-Kickback Statute by paying a consulting physician for referrals to its Gadsden, Alabama, location between October 1, 2016, and October 1, 2022, were also resolved as part of this settlement. The Department of Justice highlighted the importance of ensuring that the hospice benefit is used for eligible, terminally ill patients and not exploited for financial gain. [22]
